I think a lot of computing can be summed up as "we tried the elegant thing but it was too slow, so we made it more complex / compromised the design, and now it's fast and ugly instead"
@natecull
Today I learned about the only workers' strike in space: the Skylab 4 strike, in which the crew went no contact with Houston for 24 hours due to being forced to work 16 hours a day (for 85 days no less), and work through their meals and rest days to catch up when lagging behind.
They never made it out to space again (boo, NASA), but had a definite influence on NASA policies regarding work loads.
The Dat project, with hypercore lib and https://beakerbrowser.com/ are really promising!
Are there any tooters who played with it? Any feedbacks?
LSF users, what is the result of running `grep LSF_UNIT_FOR_LIMITS ${LSF_ENVDIR:-/etc}/lsf.conf | awk -F= '{print $2}' ` on your cluster?
Bonus: post responses at https://github.com/BD2KGenomics/toil/issues/1691#issuecomment-303947121
✨ We just launched a shiny new version of the Beaker website! Now with better docs...better everything, really. ✨
Ostrom's 8 Principles for Managing a Commons (1992, p. 10):
1 Clearly Defined Boundaries
2 Congruence between Appropriation and Provision Rules and Congruence Between
Provision Rules and Local Conditions
3 Collective-Choice Arrangements
4 Monitoring
5 Graduated Sanctions
6 Conflict Resolution Mechanisms
7 Minimal Recognition of Rights to Organize
8 Nested Enterprises
But ultimately it worked out. I learned a lot about 3D graphics, distributed systems, and managing an open source community. The first one helped me get my first job, the second helped me get my current job, and the third helped with the success of the http://commonwl.org project.

@cyphar Thank you for https://rootlesscontaine.rs/ ! Would you like contributions from a science/research software perspective?

Hey tech friends, this is a great list idea and I think it'd be cool if we helped build it out - if you can contribute info on "tech conferences that offer childcare", throw a PR or two at it:
