Please, please, please stop tooting about politics and not putting it behind a CW. It's a serious issue, and you are driving me off of this platform

Okay okay okay. Now I REALLY need your help. Which of the following travel stories would you most want to read?
- Taking the train across the country to Glacier National Park and not visiting the park
- Accidentally catching a bus to Forks, WA
- Driving through the night and happening upon Carhenge
?

Your choice will impact my career. Choose wisely, and boost this post!

Watching an MSNBC interview with Kaspersky and others. There's long been suspicion---Kaspersky Labs being a Russian company---that they can't be trusted. There's numerous classified investigations in the US directed at Kaspersky.

The reporter stated to a former FBI assistant director that Kaspersky offered the source code to the US for review. The response was that that's great, but is that what he is really providing?

This is a world that the free software community will soon be completely immune from with reproducible builds---and we're nearly there. There would be no doubt that some source code is actually what produced a given binary.

Of course, offering the source code for review is another concept we're immune from---we already have it. It doesn't matter that Kaspersky Labs is a Russian company (to me): they're still proprietary. I can't trust them, nor could I trust anyone else who asks me to run their nonfree software. What kind of security is that?

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.

Fred Rogers

i guess the grown-up version is "be the helpers. you will always find places you need to be helping."

Hey y'all. I know it's been a few days. I've been busy with some things.

I'm taking commissions right now. In general, I'll draw any request, but for now I'm advertising profile images. I'm asking $25, and I can style it however you'd like.

I posted this on BIrdsite and Crumblr, and Kit suggested I post here. I was nervous about the self promotion, but at this point, after this month, I'll have no money to support myself. If you could please, please Boost this post, I'd appreciate even that.

Pride. I'm ok with swallowing that.

Dignity. Never.

Thank you mastodon for being open source. For not having annoying tracking, or advertising. Thank you Ostatus and GNUsocial for providing an open protocol and bootstrapping a network around it. Thank you other software in the federation for doing what you do. And the people behind it all: thank you for being you.

I miss all the "Mastodon is dead" toots.

If dead means Arby's isn't here selling snark - Yep.

If dead means you can talk to people without getting buried in troll shit - Yep.

If dead means we're missing verified celebrity accounts that get preferential treatment from corporate admins - Yep.

If dead means there's more to life than follows - Yep.

We're still dead and we're staying dead!

My university just released an "official" app to "chat with your friends, look up your marks, your timetables, see your enrolment details..."

Guess who developed it? The fucking Santander bank.

Guess what the Terms & Conditions say? That your data can be sold to third parties and that you will receive advertisements from third parties.

The app even has a "News" category that is, again, controlled by the bank.

FUCK, I'M ANGRY.

yo peoples. I'm a blind 16-year-old boy with a lot to say. I'm intelligent, curious, technically skilled, a musician who writes and listens to a specific nonstandard genre, nonreligious, advocating for all personal freedoms, and someone who enjoys talking to people, no matter who you are. I am profane, but I don't say nor get sex jokes and other such things. People find me very interesting. I'm sure you will too!

Our D.C. office building got a security robot. It drowned itself. We were promised flying cars, instead we got suicidal robots.

I try to be on good terms with most everybody on this network even if I completely disagree with them, that attempt has mostly been successful.

Unix Beer: Comes in several different brands, in cans ranging from 8 oz.
to 64 oz. Drinkers of Unix Beer display fierce brand loyalty, even
though they claim that all the different brands taste almost identical.
Sometimes the pop-tops break off when you try to open them, so you have
to have your own can opener around for those occasions, in which case you
either need a complete set of instructions, or a friend who has been
drinking Unix Beer for several years.
BSD stout: Deep, hearty, and an acquired taste. The official
brewer has released the recipe, and a lot of home-brewers now use it.
Hurd beer: Long advertised by the popular and politically active
GNU brewery, so far it has more head than body. The GNU brewery is
mostly known for printing complete brewing instructions on every can,
which contains hops, malt, barley, and yeast ... not yet fermented.
Linux brand: A recipe originally created by a drunken Finn in his
basement, it has since become the home-brew of choice for impecunious
brewers and Unix beer-lovers worldwide, many of whom change the recipe.
POSIX ales: Sweeter than lager, with the kick of a stout; the
newer batches of a lot of beers seem to blend ale and stout or lager.
Solaris brand: A lager, intended to replace Sun brand stout.
Unlike most lagers, this one has to be drunk more slowly than stout.
Sun brand: Long the most popular stout on the Unix market, it was
discontinued in favor of a lager.
SysV lager: Clear and thirst-quenching, but lacking the body of
stout or the sweetness of ale.

Beginning to think that social media and private communication are fundamentally at odds with each other.  One is meant to make your content as public as possible, or at least as possible given some constraints, whereas private communication is meant to be as restricted as possible.  If I'm right about where the internet is headed (at least as far as social networks and personal communication go), social networking and private communication will need to split apart.

On a technological level, we have the private communication part solved fairly well.  The problem is that a lot of people want an all-in-one solution.  But the internet (and social interaction) is much more complex than a one-size-fits-all solution can provide.  Things work better if you have a wide variety of choices to pick from and can construct the solution that fits the individuals' needs.
