"All my scientist buddies were jealous of my hazmat suit carrying around uranium with no problem."
And just like that, work Slack is discussing hangover cures, the cult of Vim, and spare-no-expense hazmat suites.
Some things I learned about the Mastodon web UI:
The profile page of a user on another server won't show all of their follows/posts. Open it in a new tab (by middle-clicking their username in a toot) to view them all.
To boost or fav a toot on an external site, copy its URL into the search box on your local instance. The toot will be shown as a search result.
The number one pitch at my university's startup challenge was water-resistant bed sheets. It's like, okay, your sheets aren't ruined, but there's still piss in your bed, ya know? Anywhoooooo how was everyone's day?

macOS shell tip: if you drop a folder on a tab of Terminal.app, it cds to that folder.

Thank you @qinaliu for writing it!

I wrote an article about some of the protocols underneath StatusNet, and I plan to write more in the near future.

Another delicious gem I wanted to mention:
Most IRC daemons are based off the original code from 1989. Most are "2.8" based but others are "2.7" based (ircu family). It's all about where they forked. Inspircd is the only notable one that isn't 2.7/2.8 derived.
That's right. It's all based off code a university student wrote in the late 80's. And it looks like it. And it feels like it. And it's making the elephant dance trying to make it modern. I tried.
I worked for a company in the past―a distributed company. We had a policy that all developers should be able to recreate their development environment within an hour of putting a bullet through their current one. Good policy. Kept everything distributed, and lightweight :)
