Honestly it saddens me that there isn't more people talking about OpenToonz, and this fork in particular:

morevnaproject.org/opentoonz/

I was wondering "hey, why DON'T we have open source software for quality 2D animation"? -- except we *do* have it and not enough people know about it.

@arisunz isn't this what studio ghibli uses, too? good stuff

@nventous basically, yes! In particular it's a version of the original Toonz, modified by them and then open-sourced in 2016

@arisunz

I think OpenToonz is relatively well known, but not really what most people mean when they say open source 2D animation software. OpenToonz is really set up for traditional animation, which is incredibly time consuming. The average hobbyist wants an open source Flash, something that they can use to produce (admittedly lower quality) animation in their evenings after work. OpenToonz *can* be used that way, but that's not really what it was made for.

@rdh @arisunz *jumps in*
From looking at the way how people talk about Krita's animation functionality, I also think people don't understand the workflow that opentoonz was designed for. They usually complain it is too hard to use.

Especially the original Ghibli version of toonz, which had everything not useful for traditional animation turned off. Like, I've seen people not wanting to believe Japanese anime studios still have traditional pencil workflows as part of the whole.

@Wolthera @rdh @arisunz There is also Synfig, though I suppose it's for a slightly different usecase than OpenToonz. (I haven't really tried it myself thoug)

Oh my I thought I had mentioned synfig in my original comment but I guess not. Synfig is sooo close to being what I think most people want from a FLOSS animation program, but right now it's far too buggy for any serious use. I can't wait for it to be ready, and to get more popular!

@arisunz honestly it amazes me how much open source or decentralized software is out there. If you are wishing for it odds are someone has worked on it.

@arisunz I want to talk about it so badly on youtube, but I need to animate more so I can really get a good feel on it. The features are extensive in and has come a long way since 2016. I did recommend OpenToonz to a friend because of these facts. Not sure if she ever downloaded it tho.

Also the original may be coming to Solus Os at some point. People have been requesting it for their repos. (of course the appimage from the fork works too on most distros).

In short. It's cool!

@arisunz I found that project accidentally some time ago (the morevna project I mean) and I was really surprised by it.

It's really cool!

@arisunz I found that it's really hard to find tutorials for it, so it's taking me longer to get used to it! But I'm hoping to get some animatics done in it at least

@arisunz Looks encouraging. I always wanted to dabble in animation and I'll probably start with it when I do.
