Gripe of the morning: All eyeglass websites do faceting and search wrong.

Frame designs are fully segregated by "men" and "women". A minority have a "unisex" section. Sometimes it is an intersection of the gendered sets, sometimes it is an exclusive third set.

The only parameter I care to filter on is lens size. Very few accommodate that, and those that do require me to redo for each gender-section.

Eyeglass gender should be a category facet that can be toggled just like any other category.

@photopuck I've never felt drawn to playing PUBG, but I'm addicted to Polygon.com's weekly "Awful Squad" plays. In part out of schadenfreude or something, but also because they use the private server mode to create entirely new games: Old West style gun duels, car races, escort missions, and a fashion contest. Yes, a fashion contest.

The following is very long (2.5 hr) and a very slow burn, therefore YMMV. But it made me laugh the most, for reasons best left unspoiled:

And when your project's FAQ has the question "What is [your project]?" the answer has to be truthful, have a reasonable level of abstraction and ideally be ELI5-level. Leveraging it as an opportunity for snark means you're an asshole.

If the first question in your FAQ for your project is not "What is [your project]?" it's not a FAQ.

@RexfordGTugwell Even where search query is easy, parsing search result is hard.

"What is Jimmy Carter's middle name?" is a relatively low effort question, unless there are conflicting results and you are poor at analyzing credibility or at skimming text or at segregating information by value.

Those are mostly learnable skills and people should practice them whether or not they wanna, so I'm not totally sympathetic with people who always lazyweb it. But I want to be mindful of why they might.

In other news:

Just updated VLC.
No Santa hat on the traffic cone.
Disappointed.

@Siphonay If you use the Facebook logo and you are not working on behalf of Facebook, you are not beholden to those guidelines. However you are subject to laws regarding trademark and copyright.

So if you swipe the Facebook logo and put it on condom wrappers for sale, Facebook can't cite you for violating their branding guidelines. But you are probably breaking laws for intellectual property theft and misrepresentation, and Facebook can get your country's legal system involved that way.

@Siphonay Brand guidelines are usually internal documents instructing company employees (and 3rd parties like advertising and marketing firms) how to use the logos.

They're not contracts. However contracts with third parties (like ad agencies) can require those agencies to adhere to the brand guideline at risk of penalty.

I should add: Holy shit don't watch the live Hatsune Miku concert videos. The music's good but make sure you background the browser tab.

Documented there is some real bizarroworld skeeve. The combination of hyperactive, stiffly-moving pony-legged cartoon performer in front of a bunch of bored middle-aged session musicians frogmarching through the hits is really only the background to the constantly waving and churning audience of fans who seem far too hyped up to watch a live-action recording.

@joshmillard Hm. I'll contact you elsewheres about it.

For some reason I've been listening to Hatsune Miku music videos while working this morning.

DOMINANT THEMES OF MAJOR-STUDIO MIKU SONGS: I'm a beautiful virtual girl in a virtual world, anything can happen, it's amazing and I love you.

DOMANT THEMES OF HOMEMADE MIKU SONGS FROM NND: Even though I'm a virtual girl, I feel ugly on the inside, the pressures and responsibilities of life are all but literally crushing me. I don't trust you either.

@joshmillard How much would it cost to commission one?

@CobaltVelvet Since Patreon will be chomping roughly half my donation to you starting later this month, are there other tip services you're on?

@photopuck This is why for over ten years the bio for my account on the birdsite has been, "I'm only following people I know elsewhere. I'm sure you're nice though."

@fobo Hah. For me last night's memorable dream was being enthusiastic that I had finally dialed-in "the bass tone on all those classic Sub Pop singles". And a friend had bought a Danelectro bass that was roughly the size of a cello but with two strings, a shape somewhere between a bouzouki and a bowlback mandolin, and a bright flame red finish that went up the fretboard, where it stuck to the strings. I said he had a knockoff, proof his computer had probably been clickjacked by Chinese hackers.
