Book report : Dawn - Octavia Butler - 1987

This is a good book. I recommend it. Like all good books it starts with the total destruction of human civilization. Our heroine quickly learns that she's been rescued by aliens ... BUT AT WHAT COST!!!?

One thing I really like about this book is it has a good depiction of the aliens themselves. It's strange to say it, but creative aliens are kinda rare in science fiction, even written science fiction. This book does that really well.

Unfortunately it's a series, probably a trilogy, so now I have to get the rest of the books. I don't have the patience for series and probably wouldn't have started this one if I'd noticed before hand.

On a purely physical note : This book is very poorly printed. I think when they switched to digital they didn't want to typeset the book again, so they just scanned one of the existing books. Not good.

I they scanned was a normal-sized paperback, but this is a trade, so the pages have huge margins, and STILL some pages are cut off near the spine!

(Still, it's better than the hardback, which has a cover portraying the protagonist as a white lady!)

As a bookmark, I used an actual bookmark advertising "Beyond the Western Deep". A comic worth reading. ( Westerndeep.net )

@Taweret I'm assuming that's the scene where Lilith awakens Tate. It gets a lot of details right.

It would be a great cover if they drew the protagonist properly.

I'll bet Butler was pissed when she got the proof.
