Here's how I'm doing on setting up my own Mastodon instance:
- Deployed to Scalingo
- Set up SMTP server
- Set up SSL cert for HTTPS
- Works fine to create an account, post stuff etc.
But:
- FAILED to set up Amazon S3 storage, which sucks. Can't figure out the correct values for S3_REGION and S3_BUCKET, and there are no sample configs out there.
Damn it.

One thing that's good about Mastodon is that there are few people here, so you have to talk to strangers and meet new people.

Another factor to consider is that the demographic of fediverse folks probably includes a higher proportion of non-normative views and lifestyles than you might find in the silos. These non-normative people are precisely the groups which the really bad guys always seek to target. So as maintainer you should be concerned with your user's interests and practice metadata minimization which can limit any potential damage.

Just out of the blue. Does any here know the best way to promote an account on Etsy? Ready to pay for that.
I tried gab.ai a few days ago, which is another alternative to Twitter. But most posts there seem to be a bit tinfoil-haty, too much for my taste.
So I actually not a big fan of federated social networks. It promotes isolationism and echo chambers, where people don't talk to anyone else outside their circle.
Let's see how this one works out.
