I thought the dark web was about illegal activities. If that is not the case, I am willing to try. What would be the point of entry?
@Steel_Virgin
I really think that the reason is simply that the place is still relatively new so that a social hierarchy between members has not been established yet.
I still remember the beginning of Usenet, at the beginning everybody was nice because they were testing their grounds, then self-appointed gurus hot their groups of followers and it was over. All without brands and monetizing. The problem is the users themselves, the way human societies form.
@Haestinger
Mastodon is a refreshingly nice place. It feels like the beginning of the Internet, when the norm was that people are nice to one another.
It would be interesting to find out why it is so.
Unfortunately, I am afraid that the reason is simply that the reason is simply that the place is still relatively new so that a social hierarchy between members has not been established yet.
One cannot be "rejected" on a decentralized network. Enjoy!
@Hdpants
"local" to your server, here octogon. Octogon being located in France, it is also the reason you see so much French here.
@Hdpants
"The images could be a severe blow to the military which, in the face of a serious recruiting crisis, has put sustained effort into attracting women to the ranks."
Well... there are enough men living in these barracks, post picts of men instead! :grinning:
@newsstream
I see a problem with that approach and it has nothing to do with politics. If you follow only the people you add, that limits your feed to things you chose to read, explicitly. So you'll never discover new things. Let us say, I want to follow a broad selection of everything, but don't want kitten (or don't want politics, but kitten is neutral...). There is not way to do that. We would need a way to curate the feeds from kitten, but there isn't one.

Chaque "instance" est un peu comme une communauté, puisqu'il y a une liste des pouêts locaux. Donc on choisit une instance qui plaît. Par exemple par langue. Autre exemple: witches attire les femmes lgbt, etc...
@DelphineM
Your instance is hosted on a german site, and your local timeline is linked to your instance...
@LorenzoSober
En fait, non. Je trouve cela très bien un réseau SANS célébrités...
@S_lveig
La raison est que Internet/Usenet était accessible surtout aux étudiants et que la rentrée universitaire était en septembre. Puis America Online (AOL) a donné accès à Usenet à tous.
Good remark, although the more I think about it the less I believe changing the way the masses think is the point of journalism. Journalists are supposed to inform, not really educate. Educate is for schools and university and some distrust against people with "high rank in society" should be part of their charter, I think.
It is an interesting question, but the 500-characters limit is a bit narrow to develop the point...
@lorax
Est-il possible de contribuer sans s'engager à continuer à contribuer tous les mois? Un autre patron ou un compte paypal, peut-être? @CobaltVelvet
Not saying that you are wrong here, but many people feel that the place in society of the source IS essential to the story. In a nutshell: they will only believe stories if the source is high-ranking, therefore they do NOT want stories from anonymous sources.
Yes, I know it is a problem (think about whistleblowers, for example). But you cannot change the way the masses think.
You can try to move to a place with different peoples, like mastodon, though... :wink:
@lorax
I don't think that brands will come that fast. If there is one thing corporations hate, it is anarchy. They prefer, by far, a walled garden. They love to be able to link a user i.d. to a bank account and revenue estimate. All this is offered by facebook and twitter and is very valuable to them.
Trolls... yes, mastodon will have trolls. It is eternal september again. @stanschroeder
With your credentials, you could be elected President of the USA... ;). @Xibanya
