Weird thought experiment, humans need to hide from a harsh uninhabitable planetary surface.
Would you rather take a multi-generation star ship to another planet, or live in a sealed vault on Earth for an equivalent time before your descendants can come back to the surface.
@alienghic
You don't want some dumb sacks in generation 4 going, "but maybe we can live out there," killing valuable population . . . and passing the story of their failed attempt down through the family so their grandkids try again in gen 6, and 6's grandkids in gen 8, etc.
@alienghic
Generation ship with strong vocational education and equipment production facilities. And life vaults for seed stock, bacterial stock, etc.
You try to keep multiple generations in a vault on a planet (especially one with atmosphere), they'll find their ways out, perhaps catastrophically. Seeing vacuum through the windows, knowing folks who prepare for vacuum in daily life, does a lot to negate that crap.
