@ghost @tek FWIW, I totally think anti-murder laws keep folks from murdering. Louis CK put it rather well, I thought.

Cisco being shady is par for the course.

Dear magical internet fairies, I want a site for collaborative editing of markdown documents that syncs with git(hub?) and tracks changes using criticmarkup.

Also a pony.[^1]

[^1]: (I don't actually want a pony)

Machine translation is not at all like human translation. I guess we're soon going to have some data points on intelligence being "emergent".

@pnathan Are sour beers to beer as yoghurt is to milk or am I misunderstanding?

friends, having a tool that isn't dependent on your local laptop to "deploy to production" is a big deal.

@kensanata Knowledge is valuable. When I am recruiting, Stack Overflow gives me a way better picture of people than LinkedIn, for instance. I don't think software engineers are the ones driving the obsessive recording of events. People are just following the money. Note that we have precious few cultural norms that even approach universality.

@tek Docker seems to inhabit the uncanny valley between IaaS and PaaS.

@kensanata My own feeling about deleting is that we can't put this genie back in its bottle. We need to explicitly use ephemeral channels and assume that the rest cannot be deleted.

Back in . Hor Fun at Mei Ling market!

If you use one account for everything, you may not be seeing the full breadth of Mastodon. Get an account on an art instance, watch the cool art fly by the local timeline. Get an account on a French instance, bone up on your high school French. Make an instance for your coworkers, talk shop.

I don't wear swim trunks to work, I don't wear a suit to the pub, and I don't wear cargo shorts to my sister's wedding. Apply that to Mastodon and you might find it's quite natural. Decentralize yourself! 😁

@kensanata @arh1 Didn't realise that each instance is like a silo. It appears you can export and import.

@kensanata @arh1 Yes, the JS toolchain/coding culture is where I have trouble.

@pja And searching for hashtags...

@kensanata I note that you're looking for greener pastures :)

Newbie tip: if you haven't taken a moment, search for "#introduction" and say hi to some other new people, even if you don't know them or they're on other instances!

One thing that surprised me about Mastodon is the culture of kindness and friendliness here. I've promoted it to many people by saying "friendly randos will welcome you, and 'friendly randos' is not a contradiction on Mastodon." Let's help keep that true! 😁
