Many people claiming "mastodon is this... Or that". We won't know what mastodon is until people stop fucking talking about mastodon. The sooner #mastodon users start to talk about the world in which they live, the sooner it becomes useful. Until then it's just a thing that looks a little like twitter.

This is my personal Mastodon instance. I would highly urge you all to set up your own when/if you can. (The process is currently relatively uncomplicated for developers but not for people without technical knowledge.)
The danger, of course, is that a large company with lots of money will start a Mastodon node just like Google did with Gmail (Gastodon?)
Mastodon is an amazing effort and I’m glad it exists. Our next challenge is decentralising at the scale of the individual, not the community.
@aral it would be great if someone made some walk through videos / step by step tutorials for how install an instance. maybe these are out there already?

just in case someone read it later: the real question is not really technical but: How do you convince Katy Perry to join Mastodon and pay for a high-end instance and a full-time sysadmin and more CM when burdsite is free?
Also we are going to need people to localize the onboarding modals. We already have volunteers for French and Japanese. Highest priority next would be German and Spanish, given the current Mastodon userbase. After that: Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Malay, and Russian (in no particular order) would all be good to have so we've covered the Top Ten Internet Languages.
