How strange that we can know strangers from half a world away in a way that we don't know our next door neighbor. Maybe I've reached some web critical mass, but the absurdity of it all is hitting me hard lately. Yet, without you, I'm just talking to myself at 3am. #insomnia

Mastodon instance on tooot.im is up and running. Registration will open in a few days as we're still hammering a few issues and learning how to run the site.
Huge thanks to @abgd who worked with me the whole day on getting this hippopotamus flying.
I really want the ability to selectively view other instances local timelines.
@ajroach42 Similar thing with the "federated content doesn't (currently) get deleted globally"
There's a plethora of scraping bots on centralized global media (independently of the tracking the social network does itself) that will keep your data, even if you "delete" your twitter/facebook account.
Its not that these problems don't exist on centralized social media.
They do at huge scale - just less visible.
the Powers That Be prefer centralized organization. it's their game and they're very good at it.
decentralization is something they have a much harder time dealing with.
@abgd I think this is true but governments and corporations have power enough to put down all of these instances in a minute. Certainly we have the power to scale up our instances to be more fault tolerant and backpressure-based
I don't see enough talk of how the fediverse is structurally resistant to external power.
here, corporations and governments don't have any central node to pressure to suppress activity that conflicts with their interests. they could at most pressure one instance at a time, but there's no way to ever get their way across the entire fediverse at once.
the importance of this feature is tremendous.
One thing I liked about G+ was the concept of circles. I real life I am one person, but I interact with different circles of friends and acquaintances.
But what I really wanted was being able to say "This message is public, but only push it to people interested in <SUBJECT>". This would allow people to follow all my ideas or just the ones we have a common interest in.
It would be really nice if Mastodon supported this.
I couldn't resist.
I modded the @usercount bot and made a version that counts the total of all instances listed in https://instances.mastodon.xyz:
Enjoy!
Am I the only one Mastodon Bridge has just not been working for at all? Every time I try clicking "check for friends" I get an error message :sob:
I'm honestly surprised someone hasn't already made a version of birb site's birdsrightsactivist that's just upset we're abandoning birb site for tootin.

it's exciting to think what it will mean for so many people to suddenly have an experience of self-managed federal structure.
this can turn out to be a real asset if we ever get to restructure society.

INTRO TO FEDERATION 2:
1. Servers (instances) mostly communicate 2 ways: sending posts to each other & sending profiles to each other
2. When person A's profile is first sent over, it only has their name, avatar & bio*
3. When someone on your server Y follows A, their server will send Y their toots & these are A's only toots that Y knows about*
4. # of toots/followers/follows on A's profile on Y all refer to the # of t/f/f which are actually on Y directly or indirectly
*simplified 4 brevity
For those who dont know, the federated timeline displays all the activity from all the people on other instances who are followed by people on your instance.

It is therefore very good practice to follow as many interesting people from other instances as possible. We are the ropes binding this distributed system together.
Yes, my home planet is Mastodon in the Dotsocial system. And my race is called Degu (octodon) and we're the Mastodon Federation.
So my first game of #StellarisUtopia is kinda dedicated to Octodon and Mastodon  https://octodon.social/media/qCS-Yzbg8GQWgft7Ejc
