Would anyone care to explain why #markdown is such a popular feature request? Because right now I sincerely hope it never becomes part of Mastodon. Plain text is much easier on the eyes, much less messy. I like it this way.

A reminder that free speech only applies to government bodies and social media platforms are under no legal obligation to provide you with a forum for oppressive language including racial slurs.

Find an instance with more lax with their admin rules. That's not censorship, that's an individual using their right to not give you an amplifier.
It's remarkable the degree to which the Popular Mechanics piece on #Mastodon misses the point.
Brand confusion/name squatting can be serious problems--IF you're using the platform as a serious marketing tool.
Most of us are here precisely because we were sick of being on a platform that was a serious marketing tool. So maybe the lack of professional tools to promote and protect your brand are mostly a feature (and I say that as an IP lawyer who kinda takes brands seriously).
technical note about this tech as I see some confusion/misconceptions:
Admins of your instance have complete control over your account. Really, we can read all the posts (including DMs) and we can even impersonate/hack your account with ease.
Make sure you trust your admins.
Here on toot.cat we have a CoC that applies to both admins and non admins. Admins are expected to abide by the CoC and not oppress users as well.
I don't even want to hear about free speech. You aren't entitled to someone else's attention. Trolling is not a Constitutional right. You want to do that, spin up your own instance.
And certainly, someone could start a free-speech-anarchist instance with all pest controls off. For mastodon.social, though, I think they have a real responsibility to crack down on this shit.
The right to abuse is not about freedom. It silences people. It restricts freedom and expression—it never enhances it.
It might just be me and it might just be now but maybe this structure systemically discourages antisocial behavior like spamming all new followers with a personal thankyou or posting silly offers of digital prizes?
Interesting... the whole public timeline thing makes me instantly mute any account doing annoying self promotion of the kind I woulda just ignored on the bird site.
Question:
If so many men argue that the assholes are the minority, (NOT ALL MEN!!!) why do we never see giant groups of men flooding women's accounts with nice, respectful messages or support?
Why doesn't dogpiling get responded to by a flood of help? Where is the support for women being stalked and threatened? Where are y'all?
I have never in my life been overwhelmed by kindness. But men literally attempt (and often succeed) destroying my life on the daily.
Where are the "good guys"?
