People may want to be free individuals, but they also want to shape the world around them, and feel part of that world. The urges to help and to belong are as strong as, if not stronger than the urges to gain, and be independent.

When people participate and share resources, they're not just being selfless, they're influencing their environment to how they want it to be, because participation is the easiest way to do that, not power. We all gain something from giving.

PSA: if you see a remote toot and think "wow that is an amazing toot, why does it have 0 favs/boosts/replies"? It probably doesn't. It's just that nobody from this instance follows someone who fav'ed/boosted/replied to it.

One thing I found useful is to just eagerly follow people you see in the Federated timeline saying stuff you like. You can always unfollow/block later.

When many of us joined, they didn't realize this was a federated network and that you could have accounts on different nodes. It got confusing quickly.

#feditip: Until we've got a better system, adding white_check_mark emoji to your name is a convention to tell others which account is primary.
