AB is a user on octodon.social. You can follow them or interact with them if you have an account anywhere in the fediverse. If you don't, you can sign up here.

So I'm seeing some discussion about why Mastodon isn't necessarily taking off with certain minorities (let's be honest, they mean POCs while trying to dance around the term, this place is super White asides from the apparent Japan contingent).

Here's some thoughts:

1. The whole notion of "instances" is really unintuitive. When you Google "Mastodon", you get an instance like mastodon.social, but it's not immediately apparent that M.S isn't your only option or WHY you'd want a different instance

@creatrixtiara so many important and relevant points in this thread. Thank you for articulating. Some of the language needs changing is Mastodon is to be considered to be used as a serious alternative to twitter. A lot of it is still unintuitive. It took some time for me as well to wrap my head around the concepts of instances and federation. But there's also another point that it might just help build the curiosity around the platform.

@creatrixtiara also the point about impersonation kinda freaks me out as well (especially initially when a lot of people don't know about mstdn) 😕 Pretty sure there should be a systemwide reporting mechanism to avoid that.
