I'm very glad that @Chocobozzz is working on PeerTube, a federated video hosting platform. I think there is a lot of, if I may put it, thirst, for a photo sharing platform too. With those superficial differences between how Mastodon works and how Instagram works.
And I mean, you could just fork Mastodon and modify the UI. Or you could build on top of ActivityPub from scratch, like PeerTube does. The possibilities are fascinating. All within one network.

Wait, Facebook is literally pushing a VPN solution that claims to "protect" you?
A VPN that sends all your traffic through facebook's servers
How dumb do they thin... 33 million installs... Okay they might be right about how dumb people are
1984: omg what if a government used supercomputers to secretly track every detail of our lives. Must cut services and privatise all government functions (except spies, police and military) to prevent this!
2018: a loose cabal of unaccountable billionaires is now using supercomputers to secretly track every detail of our lives, to make themselves vastly rich and powerful. Well that's okay, as long as it's for *personal profit* it must be making us all better.
Honestly the sooner you can get off of Java the happier I think you'll be. Oracle has shown time and time again that they only care about making money off of Java and its trademarks and the community-be-damned.

Content isn't "free" when there are ads. The longer I work in advertising, the more this idea that content w/ads is "Free" bothers me. It's not free at all. You're paying for it with your time and attention to sponsored content, and how that content then drives you to take actions. It's not "free."

CPU Vulns are now public. There are two distinct vulns, in summary:
Meltdown: Memory accesses executed out of order after faults are leaked into caches. "Fixed" by KAISER at the cost of far slower switches between kernel and userspace. Mostly specific to Intel processors.
Spectre: Speculatively executed instructions on branch mispredictions can leak the address space through caches. No fix available it seems, and it affects Intel, AMD, & ARM processors. Possible to exploit from within browser sandboxes.
З НОВИМ РОКОМ! HAPPY NEW YEAR! :D
