@ChrisReimer I do! I've taken heat for it in RL, so the pineapple affirming culture here one of the reasons I love it here. :D :pizza: :pineapple:

Actually, petition to adopt someone's (I forget who! Sorry!) suggestion to call instances "planets," at which point we can just call it the united federation of planets.

@vic8760 is essentially a massively distributed VM, so theoretically yes. However, because it is a massive VM that is run through a block chain it is very slow, so it wouldn't be responsive at all the way it's built. That being said I reckon there is some clever way you could make a sort of social network in the block chain or at least partly in the block chain, but for my 2 cents you'd have to design it from the ground up for the specifics of the network.

@ZedFable Sadly underestimated on release. Remains a classic.

@DNA Joking aside, it seems really hard to pindown. At first blush, it seems like it should be, but the more I try to figure it out it seems like its something like this:

If I, from instance a, follow billyBob on instance B then network A gets to know about all of that toots that billy persons knows about on network B. I think. Probably wrong.

So the Federated timeline is everyone?

Just re-watched Mirror Mask for the first time in maybe a decade.

What a trippy, brilliant curiosity of a film. The soundtrack is exquisite but so unique (I guess its kind of jazz? But not just Jazz.) Pure art, the whole thing. Go watch it!

And it's so PRETTY!

@imallmostgone not to imply that Cousin would just sort of be my hive by default or as a consolation prize. I do love what they stand for, but I kind of have similar thoughts to those Kato voiced about how Science should be for everyone, not just the Utopians. In the same way being a good person, caring for the marginalized and standing up for the rights of the oppressed should be everyone's cup of tea, you know?

@imallmostgone I feel at some points in my life I might have thought Black law was cool in principle, but I'm not a fan now. I pine for the future the Utopian's see, but if I had a family like I do in real life, I couldn't be that much of a vocor. So yeah, graylaw hiveless or Cousin for me.

@imallmostgone My line of reasoning is pretty close. I'd like to like the humanists more because I like celebrating human achievment but I don't rank sport or celebrity that high up. Show more

So the mastodon.social privacy policy is ok, but if I were the maintainer I'd avoid recording any IP addresses. One thing to consider is that when you're a meganode both state and non-state organisations will become interested in your logs and will try to obtain them either explicitly, with goons showing up and making threats, or also less explicitly with implants and exfiltration or NSLs and gagging orders. If you don't record IPs then in the worst case there's not much that third parties can get.

Another factor to consider is that the demographic of fediverse folks probably includes a higher proportion of non-normative views and lifestyles than you might find in the silos. These non-normative people are precisely the groups which the really bad guys always seek to target. So as maintainer you should be concerned with your user's interests and practice metadata minimization which can limit any potential damage.

@backhand Concerns of over focusing into our own little silos are legit. But I like to think that there is a chance that with most instances federating ny default, there will still be plenty of room for cross pollination of ideas and people. In that scenario, unfederating is more like a blacklist, blocking groups becomes the exception and not the rule. Arguably better than fb/twitters algorithm tweaking your feed for you to cater to your biases.

@imallmostgone YES. I'm done with Too like the lightning and I'm about halfway through Seven Surrenders. That universe constantly fills my every waking thought.

There are so many layered, nuanced, brain stretching things ideas to shatter how you think about everything but I have to go to bed, so instead I'll just ask one thing.

What hive would you sign up for and why?

@Elex This is truly a work of art, BTW

@CobaltVelvet BTC inbound Mom! Thanks for giving a wallet address and hosting such an awesome instance!
