My puppies. They're way spoiled.
Seeing so many foreign language toots is really encouraging me to start back up with language learning again. I'd like to be able to converse with people without asking them to switch to English.
Somebody should start an 'official celebrity' Mastodon instance, and only let frightened celebs into it so they can all feel safe that their identities have been 'claimed'. Charge them a nominal fee. Make money. That's a free idea, you can have it.
@gargron Any chance of getting a light theme option on the web client? If it's not too hard to do?
@XopherY Love it. The only thing I don't love is not being able to pick the day it withdraws payment. I've had nothing but clear coverage and dependable bills.
Anybody use #ProjectFi ? Opinions?

@XopherY It seems very common. Thankfully my mobile app lets you change it. I definitely find black text/light background easier to read
Do all instances have a dark theme on the web version or just octodon.social?
Kind of wish I could change it to a light theme.

#Mastodon is a weird, wild place right now. it's fresh and invigorating and I kind of love it.
Keep Tooting, everyone!
Random sysadmin tips:
SQL is a great tool but it's also highly destructive if you just forget a WHERE. Just remember to BEGIN; a transaction when you're playing with it, you can then COMMIT; after changes or ROLLBACK/quit.
Since PG is so great, you can even change table structure within a transaction and test changes.

It seems like a big structural risk to Mastodon is that unless you're running your own server you're essentially trusting the stranger who runs the instance. Not just to act in good faith, but also to keep the server running.
Today's been a rather sad day for the world. People died and by the look of it, many more will too.
The USA fired cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase overnight, which Russia has responded to by pretty much cancelling the non-aggression pact.
And then there was the incident in Stockholm - which of course the media will claim was worse as it was "our people" (meaning western white people) that were killed.
This is all going to end badly.
Free speech doesn't mean you can be an asshole on someone else's platform that they've allowed you on to.
Free speech in the U.S. means the government can't silence you. This platform isn't run by the government - local, state, or federal.
Play by the rules or build your own platform (on your own dime).
Back when I was active on Usenet it was considered pretty normal to have house rules for any newsgroup, you were also expected to refrain from posting long enough to notice and learn the unspoken customs (this was called "lurking").
Nowadays people see it as an orchestrated attack against free speech, shout references to 1984, and threaten to move elsewhere.
Yet the ones asking us all to behave politely are called "hypersensitive"?
