Dmitri. @Winneganfake

I'm now wondering if I've managed to get myself blocked by anyone yet.

Because, hey, look. Self-employed artist means I HAVE to promote my own work anywhere I end up, since, well, I like eating and having a roof over my head. And given just how much anti-branding commentary there is in the federated feed... you all do realize some of us work for a living in ways that don't get us checks from employers, right?

@Winneganfake have you been called out on other networks for too much self promotion? Just curious.

Context: I’m a freelancer, and the majority of my past work came in through Twi . . . that other network.

@jason Don't say the T-word!

More seriously, only in a few extreme cases, but then again, most other social networks are built around the branding, unlike here. Enh, we'll see.

@Winneganfake I’ve learned if you’re providing value or entertainment to people the majority of the time, they won’t care when you mention your work at all.

@jason Which has been usually my take elsewhere as well, so we'll see.

@Winneganfake I'm totally ok with artists self-promoting (and I want them to so I can see their stuff and maybe buy it!)-- but I'm so not into brands or "social media marketing experts" taking over and "thought leading." Promote on, fellow artist.

@Winneganfake I think folks mostly take umbrage to people spamming shit like "first x followers get y". The best way to promote your work is to show it so if you aren't being a nuisance I would think people will have the decency to hear you out.
