Very interesting thread on #birdsite about the "zone rouge" in #France, leftover from #WWI.
I went to the museum in #Verdun two years ago and it was the best museum I have ever been to. Also, the surroundings were just surreal, all those huge creaters and trenches still visible.

12 years ago, added a memorial building especifically for the Senegalese Tirailleurs and muslim soldiers. Just 12 years, even though the war ended 100 years ago.
@Virelai I'd love to visit Verdun.
@windmills I can definitely recommend it :) so much history to take in and I was suprised how lovely the city itself is. It was a warm evening and everyone was outside, eating and drinking by the river. Really nice! :)
One thing about #WWI that I didn't really know about was how many soldiers from west africa, especially senegal fought for the french. They had very little rights and priviliges compared to french soldiers. For example they weren't allowed to send letters home because the french couldn't make sure that the lettres didn't contain confidential information https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senegalese_Tirailleurs
