@joXn did they have so many ornaments they couldn't fit them on one tree?
YOU try coming up with a secret handshake that works for everyone when your cult members have hands, tentacles, ghost fingers out of phase with this dimension, hooks, power gloves, drippy stalactites of wrist-mounted fluid AND there's one germophobe who refuses to shake at all.
Your immune system is fine, Gary!
"TIL an Icelandic tradition called Jólabókaflóð exists, where books are exchanged as Christmas Eve presents and the rest of the night is spent reading them and eating chocolate"
WHAT
@stevelieber that's a back cover blurb right there!

@moz I don't bust out the ski goggles for biking often, but when I do they can be a literal lifesaver.
@joXn have you read any of Ben Aaronovich's Rivers of London novels? They're comic Urban Fantasy police procedurals, but about 40% London architecture snark by volume...apparently for no better reason than that being a shared obsession of the narrator and author.
(recommended, if that isn't clear. Though not unreservedly)
If you have a mastodon.social account but have moved over to a different server, you can login to your old account and, under edit profile, setup a profile redirect note.
@kalcobalt Whats the 'today's icon' thing?
@alexlaw You could give a good one and then steal it back a few days later...
In my family, a gift suspiciously well matched to the giver's wishlist is a "left-handed catcher's mitt" after a time when my father, age 9, gave his mother said item for her birthday.
@stevelieber There was no treat Horatio the Peculiar Schnauzer liked better than fresh tomatoes. Go figure.
@gcupc i don't know how I lived before my vacuum insulated French press.
Wait...there are no allium emoji? How is that okay?
@alice The thing holding me back is the combined usefulness and entertainment value of autocomplete, really.
@alexisflower Don;'t trust my opinions on this stuff too much--I'm still a noob here too. And like I said, I think the conventions are just starting to gel.
I'm aware of the comics instance because @stevelieber started out on Mastodon.social and switched over after a few days.
@alexisflower Fuuuuuuurthermore, your current instance, Mastodon.social, is still so dominant on the mastodon landscape that if you're trying to maximize your visibility, there is a reasonable case for just staying there, especially since people migrating in from Das Birdsite often aren't even aware that multiple instances exist.
@alexisflower That's the confusing part, where the conventions are still emerging. Because I had the full address for you, I was able to follow you from my own instance. And now your toots will show up on the octodon.social federated feed. So in that sense, choice of instance doesn't matter much.
But your LOCAL feed is just the other people on your instance, and so there are networking benefits to being on an instance Relevant to your Interests.
@alexisflower The instance/federation system is definitely the biggest conceptual jump from commercial social media.
Alas for would-be self-promoters like you and me, it is a substantial obstacle to discovery. It is much harder to search the entire space of all instances, even if you have a sense of what you're looking for. Did that make sense?
@alexisflower It's just a domain name, so http://comicspace.masto.host
@alexisflower you may also want to look at @comicspace.masto.host, which is an instance focused on comics artists.
