Gary: "IM FULLY TOILET TRAINED!"

I wanna say that I'm sorry but that would be a fucking lie honestly

If Dark Souls 1 is the start of the cycle and Dark Souls 3 is the end, Dark Souls 2 is everything between. It's a story about everyone who lived and died and suffered and fought and felt *during* the cycle as it played out from afar. The rotting of the world at large.

And it is

Very fucking cool

When you finally beat the game, your character takes the Throne of Drangliec. Becomes the new dead lord of a dead land.

But... Was that what you even came here for?

The end of Dark Souls 2 is your player character finally running out of purpose and direction. The throne wasn't even what you came here for; it's just what you latched onto once you'd forgotten about your quest for a cure.

Dark Souls 2 is the tragedy of the curse writ large.

Levels are seemingly disjointed and geographically separate in a way they explicitly weren't before. Elevators lead upwards into impossible lava lakes. A tower leafs straight into a mountain pass teeming with dragons, none of which were visible from afar.

This isn't accidental.

Your hollowing mind just... Loses focus during long uneventful travel. It's not memorable enough to break through the fog.

In Dark Souls 2 you basically play two steps from being hollow, one of the mindless hordes you fight.

Every step of the way you are fighting the degradation of your own mind and purpose.

Why DID you come here? What ARE you seeking? Souls? The... Throne?

The world itself is not the singular location of Lordran, it's another country, maybe even another continent. You're on the periphery, and it implies the whole world is crumbling as well.

You are not chosen. You are just a Bearer of the Curse. One of so, so many.

You ostensibly come to this land in search of a cure. You weren't drafted into a quest or literally summoned to complete one like the other games: you're just a poor mortal cursed with undeath, a slow corruption that eats away at the mind and soul.

When you start the game, you have to be reminded of your name, and what you look like.

You'd already forgotten them.

In Dark Souls 1, you are the first successful Chosen Undead. The first to link the flame and perpetuate the age of fire. The first to take the mantle and burden of the gods of the prior age. You may not have been a specifically chosen one, but you're certainly *A* chosen one.

In Dark Souls 3, you are a revenant called back for a very specific purpose, a failsafe for when the Ds1 plan fails.

In Dark Souls 2, your insignificance is the point.
