Star trek

The borg are good and cool in exactly four trek eps:

Q Who - S02E16 (TNG)
The Best of Both Worlds, Part I - S03E26 (TNG)
The Best of Both Worlds, Part II - S04E01 (TNG)
I, Borg - S05E23 (TNG)

Every other time they show up in trek, they suck

Star trek

@Taweret And honestly, for a Star Trek species, 4 episodes is a pretty good run

Star trek

@bgcarlisle and even with the good eps, the idea that the borg would need Picard or anyone as a spokesperson was kinda bullshit and never rang true, but that two parter was hype as fuck so most of us give it a pass on that

Star trek

@Taweret If only that had been the worst Borg decision that Star Trek writers ever made

Star trek

@bgcarlisle yeah the movie fucked them up and then voyager did it's damnedest to destroy the last nanoprobes of borg coolness

Star trek

@Taweret I feel like Borg are to Star Trek as Daleks are to Doctor Who

They're just gonna keep writing episodes with them

But damned if the writers remember how to make them interesting

Star trek

@Taweret @bgcarlisle I enjoyed First Contact as a teenager, but giving the borg a queen was really a betrayal of the whole "no single point of failure" concept

Star trek

@Taweret @bgcarlisle I still can’t get over that when the Borg assimilated Picard into Locutus they gave him a set of sick 8-pack abs

Star trek

@Taweret @bgcarlisle I like the idea of them as a subject matter expert for the collective

like somewhere there's a Speaker to Rhydonium 998/3, some ludicrously tricky space crystal that requires the collective to put a bit more processing power into handling than some random drone

Star trek

@bryceyoungquist @bgcarlisle like as a writer i understand wanting the bad guys to have a face and a voice so your protagonists can talk to them

But the solution to that is not to fuck up the worldbuilding you've done on the borg. The solution is to pick a different antagonist for your movie

Star trek

@Taweret @bgcarlisle or honestly just have another Speaker who turns out to be one of Picard's victims from Wolf 359

Star trek

@Taweret @bgcarlisle like you have standard anti Borg tactics stop working, with them showing initiative, and that being a hint that wait: this far out from the collective, it's not a collective. this is the Speaker, and her limbs. And so while they can take individual initiative they can also make individual mistakes.

Star trek

@Taweret I was thinking about this too, there just kind of aren't that many different stories you can tell about a bad guy defined by their single-mindedness and lack of individuality!

the Dominion is a better antagonist for the Federation, in terms of having more stories you can tell about them, because they're flexible about their goals and methods, capable of using diplomacy when it suits them, etc.

Star trek

@nindokag the Founders are also well suited to political intrigue stories, political corruption stories, political thriller stories, pretty much any type of story where not being able to trust people is a big part of it

Star trek

@Taweret ehhhh I like 7 of 9 but yeah the Borg are less good in Voygaer.

Star trek

@Taweret The Borg have rapidly-diminishing returns as villains because their mystique is built on being unknowably alien and unstoppably powerful. Every time our heroes encounter them and survive, the Borg become more of a known quantity and less of a threat, and that erodes their core appeal.

Star trek

@Taweret (This take courtesy of my brilliant partner @ParadoxPossible, who was the one who got me into Trek in the first place.)

Star trek

@Taweret But what about-

Wait, you mentioned that episode. But what ab-

Oh, that one is in your list too.

I guess you got all of the good ones.

Star trek

@morganth yep. turns out they should have dropped them forever after those four 🤷

Star trek

@Taweret Wait, but First Contact. I’m only just thinking of it but it is in the top half of Trek movies IMO. Still can’t think of any other episodes I’d add to your list.

Star trek

@morganth yeah i know some people like First Contact and if you like it then fine, but i just don't 🤷

Star trek

@Taweret Oh and hey, digging deep here, but the novel Nemesis. It tied the Borg to a forgotten episode of TOS and made them both better because the author was a continuity geek.

Other than those two your list is definitive IMO.

Star trek

@Taweret @morganth On the Trek Movie Scale, it's decent, but that's because a lot of Trek movies suck.

Star trek

@RexfordGTugwell @morganth as far as im concerned there are 4 good trek movies: WoK, VH, UD and um, no wait i guess there's just 3 🤷

Star trek

@RexfordGTugwell @Taweret I would agree with that. I think of myself as a Trek fan the same way as I am a James Bond fan, which is to say that I love it while admitting that most of it isn’t great.

Star trek

@morganth @RexfordGTugwell yeah talking about trek on masto all this time has made me realize that when i say i'm a trek fan i really mean i like ds9, seasons 3-6 of tng, those 3 movies i listed and that's about it
(and discovery is okay i guess but i has issues and i hope ti gets better)

Star trek

@Taweret @morganth TOS has a lot of problems, but there are a handful of episodes that are quite good.

Star trek

@Taweret @RexfordGTugwell I haven’t watched any Discovery but I hope it raises the average.

Star trek

@morganth @RexfordGTugwell it has pros and cons
i really like captain pike in season two
but there are issues like it wants everything to be Maximum Drama and Maximum Stakes All The Time and that kinda doesn't work because when Everything is at level 11 then level 11 becomes average
also the storytelling can get a little jumbled
but it has some nice moments too

Star trek

@Taweret Oh wait, wasn’t there a 7 of 9 episode wher-

No, there wasn’t, was there? I had no problem with her as a character but they didn’t use her to add anything interesting to the Borg.
