so remember that awesome ds9 ep trials and tribulations? it's great on every level and also had that great little nod to how klingons of 90s trek looked way different than on TOS? everyone looks at worf confused and he just looks grim and says 'we don't discuss it with outsiders"

it was funny, it was perfect 👍

so naturally Enterprise has to piss all over it with the following two parter

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

so tucker is being transferred (obviously he won't be but that's the plot) and t'pol wants him to stay for some reason. vulcans are weird idk

@Taweret OH NOES NOT LYING
THAT IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST
MUCH WORSE THAN [insert long list of horrible bullshit they've done on this show]
BUT LYING IS A SIN

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret you know, given their complete lack of morality and humanity on the Enterprise, I'm kinda surprised they even bother with a brig instead of, like, just putting people in the airlock... 😬

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret

Because some set designers being paid minimum wage were told to redecorate the NX-01 bridge but make it look "more futurerer".

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret

did they have non multi part episodes in S4?

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@mal only a few

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret the Enterprise has it too, it’s just hidden in shadows

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret There was a whole scene at the beginning of the season where they talk about all that extra shit they're adding to the bridge.

I think they mention that Archer's "reports" inspired most of it.

("Captain's Log : I wish I had an iPad on a pole.")

(Of course, it's real purpose is to make the ships visually distinct. Like that weird spoiler they'd put on DS9's Runabouts when more than one was in the same episode.)

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret or, y'know, maybe the character who is a complete tabila rasa and could use a little screen time?
*Zoidberg voice* why not Mayweather?

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@robotcarsley that would be awesome actually but the producers wouldn't even let him talk let alone do something cool

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret yuck

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret But it's Vulcans, so they get to go to that loading screen from the matrix, but with less leather and no infinite racks of guns.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret

For me I basically picture my whole psyche being shined through a prism and being split up like a rainbow. Then I listen to each "voice", then question each "voice" with good points that the other ones made, and then when some sort of consensus, agreement, or compromise is reached we go back through the prism and reemerge as one.

Wow that actually felt cool to type out. Best way I could describe it.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret

yeah I remember it was the least surprising thing ever to find out Reed was in s31

re: personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret but he's a *spy operative*. he has to wear all black leather. it's in his contract. like how the super-evolved people had to wear shredded pathetic-punk outfits.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret

Also they used normal Enterprise lighting for this scene lol

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret Section 31 was born ruined

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret Section31 *started* ruined.

It's always been a vehicle for stories where the moral is "Don't be such a naive liberal. The REAL MEN are keeping you safe and you'll always need them."

Our heros make a speech or something, then do nothing, tacitly confirming the premise.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell i don't agree with that reading at least as far as ds9 goes

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret

Of course, I've already mentioned that I don't like how S31 plays such a major role in ending the Dominion War.

They committed a horrific war crime to give our heroes (Odo specifically) the leverage they need to force a cease-fire, and nobody has any qualms about using that leverage.

Nobody even mentions it.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell i think the point on ds9 is meant to be the federation is a superpower and you don't amass and maintain that level of power without doing some shitty things. i'm very sure, that at least during the Behr year's of ds9, we are not meant to see the federation as the clear cut good guys

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret no one mentions it since it’s explicitly not what happened. Like, it was the Founders’ plan to fight to the last Jem’Hadar so the Dominion could just rebuild and take over with minimal opposition. This was with the knowledge that the Link was dying and that the Founders may not live to see that victory.

Once Odo cured Salome Jens, Starfleet lost any leverage that 31 provided. She could have *easily* escaped, cured the Link and carried out her plan with 31’s disease not being a factor at all.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret Think about it - you’re the Founders: You’re fascists waging a war based on the idea that your enemy is an existential threat to you. You know you can’t win right now, so you plan to force a war of attrition that will leave them in ruins and unable to stop you in the future, even if you die from a mysterious illness before the final victory since your army will keep the fight going.

Why would you surrender after learning that your entire stated reason for war was justified *and* that a genocide attempt has been thwarted...unless you can be convinced by the power of love like liberals like to believe.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret ...and then Odo shares the story of how his friends love him.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

Yeah, he shares his story.

... including one vital piece of information they didn't already have : "We can cure you and save your species."

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret she didn’t care about that. They planned to keep going even if they all died. Salome Jens said this.

Like I said, she learned that her entire reason for the war was explicitly justified and would have had little to no difficulty taking the cure from Odo and curing the Link herself. “We can cure you and save your species” gets answered with “I just took your cure. It’s mine now and I’m going to cure everyone else.”

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

You're missing a **HUGE** distinction.

When they decided to "Keep going even if we all die", they believed their death was inevitable, and winning the war would be their final act. A blaze of glory.

That doesn't mean they wouldn't jump to save themselves once they learned it was actually possible.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

It was implied that she couldn't escape. If things had gone sideways both changlings would have been phasered.

But, Even if she escaped _that room_, and that city, and that planet, they could have easily closed traffic to the wormhole for a month or so.

That was well within the Federation's power.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

She actually speaks the line "I don't mind dying, it's knowing that my entire race is dying of the same illness and I can't do anything about it."

So that shows us her priorities, and a few scenes later she's offered a chance to do exactly that.

Perhaps that wasn't 100% of her motivation, but it's crazy to think it wasn't a huge portion of it.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

(It's not as though access to Odo's memories will convince her that the Klingons and Romulans are non-threatening by nature.)

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret She could have taken the cure to the Link herself without much difficulty. One of the constants of DS9 is that you can’t stop Changelings who are trying to get away.

The entire raison d’etre for the Dominion was “solids will kill us if they get a chance.” That had been proven to Salome Jens twice four years. Do you really think that she would have changed her mind about that because solids were threatening to kill the Link? Do you really think that Odo would have actually believed that curing the Link wouldn’t just strengthen their resolve to try to conquer the Alpha Quadrant again if the war only ended because Salome Jens cut a deal to end it in exchange for a cure?

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret The resolution of the war requires an ideological transformation on the part of the Founders - the kind of transformation that “the power of love” causes in fiction.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

There's simply no universe where
"I have a cure to the plague killing your people." isn't a massive piece of leverage.

If she had asked the federation for help without surrendering, it's unlikely they would help, causing the extinction of her species.

If she had run the gauntlet, there' a chance she'd fail, and cause the extinction of her people.

How is that not HUGE leverage?

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

(If she had chosen to make a break for it, there is a real chance she wouldn't have gotten out of that room. Garak is holding the same style of weapon that Bashir used to instantly kill a changeling. And even when Kira tells him to lower it ... he doesn't really.)

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret FOUNDER: The Dominion has spent the last two years trying to destroy the Federation, and now you're asking me to put our fate in their hands?
ODO: Yes.
FOUNDER: I can't do that, Odo. I don't have your faith in the solids.
ODO: Perhaps I can change your mind. Link with me.
KIRA: Odo, what are you doing?
FOUNDER: I'm afraid I can't Link with you, Odo. My disease prevents me from changing form.
ODO: If we Link, I believe I can cure you.
GARAK: That's a very bad idea, Constable.
KIRA: I agree.
ODO: Nerys, I know what I'm doing. Please, take my hand.
FOUNDER: And if you cure me, what will you ask in return?
ODO: All I ask is that you Link with me.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret If you’re right, contrary to his disdain for hidden motives and not simply saying what you mean the first time, Odo intended to withhold the cure he said he would give freely and use it as leverage to coerce a surrender. When he said “perhaps I can change your mind,” “if we link I believe I can cure you,” and not naming a price, he really meant “I’m going to use this cure as leverage and force you to give me what I want.”

Odo represents the element of honesty. It’s completely antithetical to his nature to conceal motives and not simply say what he means. It would mean a complete reversal of his character to conceal a price for sharing the magic of friendship and cure for 31’s disease.

"Do you really think that she would have changed her mind about that because solids were threatening to kill the Link?"

It's not about a threat. It was done, unless an active step was taken to reverse it.

A step that required Federation cooperation.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

I don't believe that changelings can go anywhere they want.

They couldn't return to The Link once the Federation had the wormhole.

At least two were killed with hand-held weapons.

Everyone seems to confidently accept that forcefields can contain them.

While they can form ships, they can't form invisible ones, so doing so would make them vulnerable to anti-ship weapons.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@apLundell @Taweret It took a room full of Klingons firing disrupters for a while to kill slime Martok. Garak and Kira and their hand phasers weren’t a threat to her.

Also what part of “the founders were committed to their long term plan even if the Link died” makes the Federation trying to stop all traffic to the wormhole a realistic problem?

...and it would have been trivially easy for her to sneak onto DS9 then steal a ship and get to the wormhole. Or she could have just flown into the wormhole without a ship.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@SelfsameSynonym @Taweret

Since when are hand-phasers not a threat to Changelings?

Bashir killed a changling with a Bajoran hand phaser.

personal log stardate 96918.07 i continue to complain about enterprise

@Taweret Check out the other windows Reed has open.

Four of them are unlabeled lists of numbers, and one appears to be a schematic for a torpedo.
