I understand spent coffee grounds are good for banana trees.
Can anybody confirm that?
I have a lot of both.
@ckeen I know they're good for roses.
Going to have to save my grounds and not put them in the compost bin.
You mentioned roses, and they like alkaline soil. Same thing w bananas?
@Stonekettle My only friend who has successfully grown bananas in southwest Georgia swears by coffee grounds and chicken poo.
@SurlySouthernLiberal I"m in a similar climate and got the same advice.
Excellent!
@Stonekettle They're a slow release of nitrogen that is good for fertilizing, so yes, they'd be good to use with your banana trees.
@RattusInsanus That's good to hear. Like I said, I have a lot of both banana trees and coffee grinds. Especially the coffee grinds.
@Stonekettle @RattusInsanus First few minutes in octodon land so I come to find my favorite blogger. The first post I see he's talking about having a lot of banana trees and coffee grinds. That's a homegrown remedy for diarrhea in certain countries, so naturally, as a medical person, I assume the worst. Kept reading. Glad to find out it's just a random gardening question.
@Stonekettle Here's how to make coffee grounds compost, if you're so inclined.

@Stonekettle Coffee grounds are nitrogen rich which is good for foliar growth... since banana plants are essentially all herbaceous leaves, I would think it's a good match. I don't know about the acidifying nature and if it's good for bananas, so you might want to add some egg shells too, to help neutralize.
@Stonekettle I use coffee grounds for keeping the plumbing open to the sewer system
😀
@JohnFM @Stonekettle I use coffee to keep my plumbing open, also! 😜
@Stonekettle Coffee grounds are good for any sort of composting project. People in Melbourne use them on banana trees.
@Stonekettle I don't know about banana trees specifically, but I used to use coffee grounds in my garden all the time. My local shop gives away the grounds for composting/fertilizer.
@Stonekettle Use them in a compose pile, when the compose is ready use that around your banana trees and any other plants..
@Stonekettle Coffee grounds make good mulch. But watch those banana guys, they're real caffeine junkies!
@Stonekettle I have been told that banana skins are especially good for staghorn ferns. Some plants like potassium.
@Stonekettle
I don't know about banana trees but coffee grounds will keep squirrels from digging in your potted plants.
@Stonekettle Dunno about bananas, but coffee grounds are great for roses.
@Stonekettle I don't know about banana tree since we don't have any around here, but they're great for compost heaps.
@Stonekettle I don't know about banana trees but ground coffee beans make a nice fertilizer for plants in general.
