@Starling there's an elephant with a paper aeroplane on the bottom left of my 'create toot' pane. Has it always been there? Am I going mad?

You're not going mad, though. I think it used to be on the other side of the screen, in the Getting Started column. It seems to have switched sides since the instance was upgraded to the latest version.
