Starling @Starling

I'm trying to figure out what I should read next. My Dresden Files reread has stalled a bit, and I'm thinking I should switch genres in the meantime.๐Ÿค”

@Starling
Give Ben Aaranovitch's Peter Grant series a read

@tisch I think I might just do that. I've got all the books on my shelf and gave them a quick read through when I got them, but it might be time to get into them properly. Thanks!โ˜บ

@Starling I've just re-read them and was struck anew by just how damn good they are.

@tisch I think I definitely need to reread this, especially if there's another book coming out soon.

I think I've got my next book sorted.โ˜บ

@Starling There's 6 main books and a couple of short stories. Not sure when the next one is out though

@tisch Ah. I may have been getting mixed up with the short stories. I'll have to track those down.

@Starling The two i've found are 'the home crowd advantage' and 'the furthest station'. I think there may be more but in graphic novel form

@tisch Graphic novels, too? I have a lot of reading to do.โ˜บ

Thanks!๐Ÿ˜Š

@Starling Also, I can seriously recommend Jodi Taylor's 'Chronicles of St Mary's' series. Also ripping yarns, larded with sarcasm and damn good reads

@tisch That's completely new to me, so I'll definitely be having a look for that. Methinks a trip to the library is in order next week.๐Ÿ“š

Thanks for the recommendation!โ˜บ

@seaw Always worth a read. Especially the Watch novels; Vimes and co are brilliant.โ˜บ

Definitely bumping Pratchett up the list.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

@Starling Man, Vimes is hands down my role model. Sybil too, but Vimes is... Ah, I don't know. I want to be like him when I grow up.

@seaw Same here. I think Vimes is one of the best characters in any genre. Sybil is the perfect compliment to him.

Night Watch is one of my all time favourite books.โ˜บ

@Starling I think "Guard! Guard!" and "Night Watch" literally shaped me as a human being. Along with "Going Postal" and the one with the communication tower network (which name in English escapes me, I need to reread them all in English....). And "Thug". WHERE IS MY COW?

@seaw THAT'S NOT MY COW!๐Ÿ˜„

Thud's another favourite of mine, as is Feet of Clay and Monstrous Regiment. In fact, they're all good. The only ones I couldn't really get into were the Wizards/Unseen University ones, but everyone's got their favourites.โ˜บ

And yep, Going Postal and Making Money were great. Pratchett's writing and way of looking at the world were brilliant, and somehow still relevant. I'd loved to have seen what he'd make of events these days.

@Starling I actually liked Rincewind the less, I think - of course, Monstrous Regiment deeply pleased me :D But I did like "Unseen Academical" a lot.

Me too. Although it saddens me that this world only seems to get madder and madder... We need authors like him more than ever. (And I think he really shaped me as a writer, too.)

@seaw I'm not much of a writer, but I think his way of seeing things definitely affected me, and in a good way.

You're so right. We need writers like him more than ever, and I just wish that more people would read his books.

@Starling Oh, yes - I meant to say that he changed me both as a writer and as a person.

Yes. I don't want to dare hoping that one day I'll write just as him, but... our generation needs someone to teach us and open our eyes and have us think through entertaining fantasy.
