@Siphonay
Is there an adapter I could use to install this WiFi card I salvaged from a broken laptop into my desktop?
@Siphonay i think that's a regular pci-e?
@Siphonay any Mini PCIe to PCIe adapter will do
though it looks like the antenna has been removed from this module, so, ymmv
@Siphonay a wifi chip will still work with no antenna, as it'll use the board itself as an antenna, but inside of a desktop computer case with all that interference it probably won't work all too well
@unascribed it was like that inside of the laptop 🤷♂️ do you think there's something I could use as an antenna?
@Siphonay you'd need to find something that can connect to those two contacts on the top of the chip
@Siphonay most laptops just have wires that run through either side of the monitor half of the laptop
@Siphonay well, here's a part that has everything you'd need, including an antenna adapter (to coax, so you'd need an antenna that can connect to coax, but those are common) https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1JM2EX1186&cm_re=mini_pcie_to_pcie_adapter-_-9SIA1JM2EX1186-_-Product
a good WiFI AC USB adapter is ~$30
@Siphonay not saying get it from here specifically, or even this exact part, but, the thing you want *does* exist
@Siphonay oh, huh, it comes with a coax antenna. neat.
@unascribed @Siphonay oh fuck nvm I misread I thought this was about putting this in a notebook sorry
@Siphonay here's the same basic part on Amazon that ships sometime this decade https://www.amazon.com/Allytech-Wireless-Network-Ethernet-Converter/dp/B00SMLYKI2/
@unascribed @Siphonay if there's an existing WiFi card in the notebook you should just be able to disconnect the antennae from that and connect it to the new one
@unascribed wow I'll look to get something like this, thanks!
@Siphonay check if you can get a good USB wifi dongle before getting a mini PCIe adapter, by the way - the PCIe adapter is a niche part and will cost more than just the materials as such, while wifi dongles are a much more common item and you can get them cheap
@Siphonay Most of them are mini PCI-E so a mini PCI-E to PCI-E 1x adapter is probably what you need.
https://superuser.com/questions/428084/can-i-use-my-laptops-wireless-adapter-in-a-desktop-computer
@Siphonay usb<>mini pci-e, si elle est cablée en USB (souvent le cas) mais la datasheet est pas dispo donc dur de le savoir :/
@Siphonay depends on the interface, but you can normally get an adapter.
My guess is mini-PCI express to PCI express. (That may not be right though. Check the relevant details online!)
@Siphonay also worth bearing in mind is the need for an antenna of some description.
If you're not reusing the one from your laptop then you'd need to order that too.
You might find in the end that it's cheaper just to buy a USB dongle 😅
@Siphonay yes, this type of thing definitely exists.
@Siphonay https://www.amazon.de/STARTECH-COM-PEX2MPEX-PCI-Karte-Adapter/dp/B006K24RA6/ref=sr_1_20?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1530523528&sr=1-20&keywords=mini+pcie+to+pcie+adapter
This. But it is probably cheaper to get another pcie wifi card...
@Siphonay This board appears to be a mini PCIe-board. Look for mini PCIe to PCIe adaptors.
@Siphonay if your wifi card is a mini PCI express card (should be), you can use an adapter like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Allytech-Wireless-Network-Ethernet-Converter/dp/B00SMLYKI2/ref=pd_sim_147_6
@Siphonay To me that looks like mini-PCIe and wikidevi agrees. You should be able to use an mPCIe to PCIe adapter, if you have any open PCIe slots.
@Siphonay It would look strange, but try just sticking it into a regular PCI-E slot. It's supposed to be the same type of connector, just much bigger.
@Siphonay But just to be safe, I'd try one of these Shenzen specials: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-PCI-e-to-PCI-e-1x-Converter-Wireless-Network-Card-Adapter-External-Antenna/122688562774
@Siphonay This is just a pciexpress connector in the m2 format i think.
So any motherboard with a m2 connector should work (anything modern).
