I just changed my S9's firmware from my service provider's to the "naked" one. Without OEM unlocking. Without voiding warranty. Without even losing ANY data. This is great. I'll get faster OTA updates, and no ugly "Orange F" text permanently taking space up in the notification bar

Downloading the firmware, applying it and rebooting my phone took at most ten minutes

Can't believe how much of a breeze this process was. Pretty sure my mom could do it

@Siphonay ...wait... what is all this? i'm confused o_O

@sc my phone's firmware was the one of my service providers'. It has a few bloat-y apps preinstalled and "Orange F" written on the notification area (like on older iPhones with the carrier text), and I had to wait extra delay for new firmware versions the time Orange applies its modifications to it and distribute it (which in some cases also never happens)

Samsung lets you use a tool named "Odin" to easily switch firmwares, so I installed the firmware that would be installed by default if I

@sc didn't buy it from a carrier.

@Siphonay Ah, did they finally get rid of all the false security stuff?
I really wanted to do that with my old Note 4 when it was still working, but if I had it would have triggered KNOX and voided my warranty.

@MochiWaifu no, it didn't, I just changed official firmwares. It's an easy procedure, Odin is an official Samsung tool and flashing an official firmware doesn't even require unlocking the bootloader. So Knox isn't even reacting to that

@Siphonay Hmm, i thought at one point even that was tripping it but maybe i'm remembering things wrong B)

I wonder why i didn't flash it then, hmmm

@MochiWaifu maybe all of this wasn't available yet at the time?

@Siphonay Odin was at least ;;

*shrug*
Maybe it was a carrier feature, or maybe I was thinking about stock ROMs with root preinstalled... hmm

@Siphonay I recommend Heimdall, tbh. You’re not stuck using Windows and it’s free software using the same interface and protocol Odin does. glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/

@slightlyflightyone ah well I was using a machine that only had Windows, it's my desktop that I use for gaming, so it went fine

@Siphonay Yeah, so it isn’t officially supported and might or might not be a maliciously modified version of the tool.

@slightlyflightyone Alright, I'll use Heimdall if I need it in the future
