I am an #atheist. I have been for most of my adult life. I grew up in the church, the son of a pastor.
When tragedies strike, I'm critical of the people who will say "OH NO! #thoughtsandprayers"! and then do jack shit else.
As @Stonekettle has repeatedly said: IF you want a better country, be a better citizen.
That's my mantra now. I want our country to be better. I want our world to be better. Now is the time. Now is the place. It's time to talk #guncontrol.
@pamsowerwine @Stonekettle It's an interesting idea to think about, but I doubt a punitive tax would pass any legislative body.
If I were looking at ways to fund preventative measures, I would look at a tax on Firearms related products.
You could even use a tax on firearms to help fund further and more stringent checks / assessments in a licensing program.
I'd pay an extra 1% on a brick of shells if it helped reduce the number of deaths by firearm.
@Shoju @Stonekettle
Can we propose a tax on the sale of all guns and ammunition to pay for the creation of trauma centers across the country? We can start at a 1% tax, with a provision that every time there is shooting with 4 or more injured, in any of the states of territories, the tax goes up 0.01%. Seems like a very small percentage, but we would very quickly have a very high tax rate. We could even cap it at no more than a 30% tax rate. Incentive to institute meaningful gun control.
