So I tried and failed, but here's an idea of someone to run with: Build a simple front facing mastodon head out of octagons... (I tried with various sized octagons for each of head, ears, trunk, eyes with subtle tonal differences for shading...got too messy though!...maybe I'll try again later in MODO instead of pixelmator...)

No matter, when I think of the octodon "tribe" my mind doesn't come up with anything logical anyway...if we were to mobilise in force, I think we'd be more like:
