a pair of green pants @Orwellia

*whispers quietly* text based interfaces terrify me and I don't know how to deal with them

@kingu_platypus_gidora whenever I work in shell or do command prompt things I'm absolutely terrified that the commands I enter will destroy my computer

@Orwellia There is not much danger as long you do not become "root" but use sudo (and only when really necessary).

Also copy/pasting commands from the Internet might not always be a great idea :)

Otherwise, everything is so much quicker and less bothersome than gui....

@kingu_platypus_gidora What's the reasoning for using sudo instead of root commands?

@Orwellia
if you are the root user, everything you type is definitive even if it is to make you computer explode.

If you are a regular user, commands that would affect the system will issue some kind of "access denied".
The only damage you can do is on the files you have in your home directory

"rm -rf /" as root erase your whole drive

"rm -rf /" as a regular user tell you that you cannot do this!

@kingu_platypus_gidora ah, I see, that makes a lot more sense now! Thank you for the explanation :)
