@1337 guess what!
@Cocoron You better get on that quickly. I think the US's shelf life is running out.
The increasing I'm-switching-to-node-X toots are both a sign if the fediverse working as intended (as like-minded users flock together), but also shows that key functionality is still missing (handling instance-migration silently and transparently)
@NicePoint What?
โ
Is this some new form of encryption that turns normal english into confusing metaphors?
โ
I feel I am missing the key.
@Elizafox Oh calm down... four hundred and fifty people (the population of a small town) are not following you because they hate your ideas.
โ
They are following you because they are, at least, interesting.
โ
I am sure you would have an excellent solomonesque reason for eating babies. After all, eggs are delicious.
@voidzero I want to continue this conversation with you, but will have to do so in the morning.
@Elizafox I am confused. This seems to be antithetical to the entire idea of mastodon.
โ
Are you suggesting that you will have to let people vote on who to follow?
โ
Or are you suggesting that you create an instance that sits in it's own little corner and doesn't play with the other kids? By which I mean, federates with no one, in or out.
โ
If you ask me, both are very ill-suited to the mastodon platform. Then again... I probably would not get it.
@voidzero I see, you where pointing out the apparent hypocrisy in their willingness to profile the all people in an instance.
โ
Fair point... though one is an example of national/racial profiling and the other an example of idealogical profiling.
โ
I think people hope to see self selection processes guide people into groupings on instances that can be easily profiled and toggled.
โ
Instances are not countries.
Brief history of the universe: hydrogen is a light, odorless gas that given enough time and density may form into conditions and configurations capable of having and expressing conscious thought
Who first looked at a sea urchin and thought to themselves, "hey, I should eat that?"
Further more, why would one want to ingest something that looks and acts like the taboo love child between an igneous rock and a porcupine in the first place? This question pickles me...
Welp. I promised myself I would not toot after twelve.
โ
Goodnight.
@miles My point was that a redesign of that scale would be impossible.
โ
Though that sounds like a excellent solution if we where to design the system from the ground up, cryptography is, unfortunately, practically impractical.
โ
I do like the sound of that however. You should write that up. I do not think that a TOFU model of auth has been suggested. Though it is unlikely to succeed, it is worth mentioning.
@miles I think migration is the most important issue facing mastodon. Without it, the federation is missing it's capstone.
โ
That said, I think crypto, through ideal from an ideological standpoint, is ill suited to the design paramiers of mastodon.
โ
Instead, PuSH/WebSub redirection is probably the way forward.
โ
I urge you to read the github issue. It will address much of this idea.
@miles This is why the problem is so tricky. Furthermore, instead of useing keys for ID, mastodon uses the name and url.
โ
Mastodon would have to be redesigned to use the public keys as the Ostatus identification.
โ
I know about these problems because I had a very similar solution to migration.
@miles Well, the problem your suggestion, and to be clear, it is a problem of our own design, is that it would require extension of the Ostatus protocol.
โ
Mastodon federates with GNUSocial and a host of other distributed chat systems. Implementing your idea would not work for the people who follow into the mastodon network, but do not run mastodon.
@miles https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/177
โ
Write it up. People have been antagonizing over how best to handle this for months.
@voidzero You are probably correct.
โ
I feel like there is probably some point intended in this assertion. I am not finding it.
