The increasing I'm-switching-to-node-X toots are both a sign if the fediverse working as intended (as like-minded users flock together), but also shows that key functionality is still missing (handling instance-migration silently and transparently)

If you ask me, both are very ill-suited to the mastodon platform. Then again... I probably would not get it.

Fair point... though one is an example of national/racial profiling and the other an example of idealogical profiling.

I think people hope to see self selection processes guide people into groupings on instances that can be easily profiled and toggled.

Though that sounds like a excellent solution if we where to design the system from the ground up, cryptography is, unfortunately, practically impractical.

I do like the sound of that however. You should write that up. I do not think that a TOFU model of auth has been suggested. Though it is unlikely to succeed, it is worth mentioning.
@miles I think migration is the most important issue facing mastodon. Without it, the federation is missing it's capstone.

That said, I think crypto, through ideal from an ideological standpoint, is ill suited to the design paramiers of mastodon.

@miles This is why the problem is so tricky. Furthermore, instead of useing keys for ID, mastodon uses the name and url.

Mastodon would have to be redesigned to use the public keys as the Ostatus identification.

I know about these problems because I had a very similar solution to migration.
@miles Well, the problem your suggestion, and to be clear, it is a problem of our own design, is that it would require extension of the Ostatus protocol.

Mastodon federates with GNUSocial and a host of other distributed chat systems. Implementing your idea would not work for the people who follow into the mastodon network, but do not run mastodon.
