What would happen if mastodon.social went off line? Has it happened before? For How long? Did it stunt the proliferation of toots around the federation?

Retooting ("boosting", if you hate fun) and following are somehow allowing toots to travel to most of the 500ish instances. How many have to go down before toots stop circulating and the federated timeline slows down?
