It looks like currently, about fifty thousand users is the maximum that an instance can support.

#octodon is about 1 seventh of the way there... and currently ranked seventh in terms of users.

Damn you zipf's law! You have thwarted me yet again!
Then again... assuming all instances follow zipf's law... with a nice theory of graph density... could be used to form an approximate modification of metalf's law for the federation.
@NthTensor how do you get to that number? (50')
@NthTensor but how do you draw the conclusion that 50' profiles is the maximum of what one instance can support?
@outcast I was extrapolating. The top three instances have been hovering around fifty thousand for quite some time.

To clarify, I was not suggesting this is necessarily a limit set by software. Rather, it could be that the nature of the federation encourages people to move away from the larger instances at some point.

Just a ballpark guess based on approximate observable evidence. No intellectual rigour to be found here, I am afraid.
@NthTensor ahh ok - I understand. Will be interesting to follow if they grow further.
