Les soirées parisiennes sont meilleures avec les twittos-mastodos sûrs.

It's kinda weird to think about a social network where businesses own their own presences, rather than relying on a capricious third party service like Twitter or Facebook. Imagine NBC or The Verge running a Mastodon instance for their reporters to toot from, or Bethesda operating an instance for PR and customer support. No more lost business when Facebook changes their algorithms again because they need more money from boosted posts.

Weird, right?

I don't think that brands will come that fast. If there is one thing corporations hate, it is anarchy. They prefer, by far, a walled garden. They love to be able to link a user i.d. to a bank account and revenue estimate. All this is offered by facebook and twitter and is very valuable to them.
Trolls... yes, mastodon will have trolls. It is eternal september again. @stanschroeder

Snapchat too was conceptually fascinating. At a moment in time when 'content' - be it someone's life's work, a cute animal picture, disastrous world events, memes - is all by-and-large equally easy to consume, dismiss, and forget, along came ephemeral content that *demanded* attention lest it be Gone Forever, unlike...everything else on the internet. That was (and is) powerful. Now soured by feature creep, fatigue, and poor UI/UX choices.

Twitter was, and still is, conceptually fascinating - like broadcast television for the 21st century. Constant stream of channels to choose from in real-time. The timeline and mention changes have turned it into little more than a Facebook competitor. The monetisation issue always seemed to have an obvious solution in ecommerce. Thankfully Mastodon is fundamentally divorced from VC startup culture.

Shout out to everybody who has spent years working in corporate social and has found themselves with significantly less to say as a result. Self-censorship is real.

Mastodon is really rather interesting. It feels like one of those slow motion poignant moments thanks to the federated firehouse. Remains to be seen whether it'll continue, but this feels like home in a way nothing else has for years.

Are you kidding me? The Cheeto got here ten minutes before me?
