I've been reading a lot about pain and illness lately and it's remarkably helpful for understanding, communicating and living with my illness. A Life Less Convenient and Opium Eater are personal. Both spend time meditating on the grief loss denial of illness, but I esp loved ALLC for focusing on how illness can affect romantic relationships and Opium Eater for so carefully detailing the agonizing balancing act of medicating pain. #books #reading

Not Tonight is a sociological examination of migraine and spends a lot of time talking about how we legitimate illness and its treatment - medically and socially - and how that legitimation process gets all tangled up with gender and weird historical medical stuff and class and race. It also goes into what happens when diseases lack legitimacy in different spheres. Illuminating even if you don't care about migraine. #books #migraine

I'm only 10% thru The Minority Body. TMB is by disabled analytic philosopher Elizabeth Barnes. Medical and social model of disability have some glaring inadequacies + AP view is horrifying. She fillets AP view and builds a new theory drawing a lot from disability rights+pride for physical disability. Like watching someone dance with knives. So graceful and sharp you don't notice your argument is being cut to ribbons. #books #illness
