question, did the modern age start with the advent of the smart phone? discuss
@datn that's a good one, but I'm writing a novel set 10 years ago and social media wasn't around then and neither were modern smart phones.
@Migukin so not to split hairs, but are you pondering, "what is the world-changing event in whose era i should set my novel?" or "what world-changing events happened 10 years ago?"
@Migukin @datn 10 years ago Facebook was a well-established thing, and the first iPhone came out and destroyed the Cambrian diversity of smartphones that existed at the time.
I left my home country for the second world at that time, and returned not long ago. I was shocked by contactless payments, everyone with a smartphone, the gig economy, and the tolerant status quo. And the death of live TV in favour of streaming. I haven't watched live TV since I was a teenager, and don't expect to again.
@derwinmcgeary @datn that's true. and yet, Facebook did not open up to the public until early 2007 I think. this story is set in 2006-2007
@Migukin @datn I guess it's like @greatdismal@twitter.com put it: the future's already here, just unevenly distributed. If your characters are students they have Facebook (at least some of them) and smartish phones and maybe laptops. And the war in Iraq was exposed as a lie and a loss. And a Russian spy was dying slowly in London. And the great bank robbery was getting ready to crash the global economy.
Interesting times, as the American curse has it.
@Candelario34 @datn I think people want chat room again, they definitely use Twitter like they do.
@Migukin nah, internet.
@Migukin if we're considering events that recent, how about as an alternative the global financial crisis?
