Phone senses it's nearing a good spore dispensing location; sends message to another infected phone "need my host to stop, send a fake text message"; second phone sends text spam "forward this to win a free lifetime supply of Hot Pockets"; person stops to forward the spam to their entire address book. That works.

It doesn't explain all cases, but does cover about 30% of the hallway boulders from this past week. Maybe there are multiple fungus variants?

Oh no. What if they're infected with some weird variant of Ophiocordyceps fungus, and are showering passersby with invisible mind-altering spores?!?

The ability of human beings to gravitate to a traffic choke point and stop there to talk or check their texts is amazing. This can just be random action, there must be some deep instinctive to "go here and stop".
