@masklayer but there isn't a compelling reason why an audio file is verboten while a video isn't.

@masklayer if I was at a computer I could just batch convert files and upload them. If I planned on doing it a lot I could just automate it. From a phone there's like two extra steps, which isn't an impediment at all. Just an irritation.

Like at this point, making music happen onto the mastodon is a trivial, albeit irritating, process.

@tom I tried ffmpeg but honestly it didn't have the existing options. Neither did fdroids video transcoder app.

Ok I got a music to mastodon without using a computer, proving that there's no reason why it shouldn't be easier.

@ross well that's not really a solution. I have a computer, but I rarely use it. I have a laptop, but I rarely use that. I DO use my phone for everything, and there's no reason why it couldn't manage this, considering it's just transcoding.

@gargron all it needs is to be slightly relaxed accepting mp4s with corrupt.or absent video channels and I would be over the moon

I'm at a point now where I'd even consider uploading and ripping a YouTube video if I didn't think it would be copyright flagged before leaving the gate.

Android app
As few ads as possible, ideal number: zero
Take mp3, become MP4
Add image for video content
Upload to mastodon.

@gdkar oh I'm trying that now. It's also ads. Let's see if it does this one simple trick of turning an mp3 into an MP4 with a black frame for video so I can fucking upload audio

The world is full of shit that will rip audio from a video, and nothing that works in reverse without being blasted by full screen ads every time you press a button. Am I mad? Yes. Am I surprised? Not even a little.

I've tried a couple apps on the android store and they were 1) unable.to do this simple trick and 2) entirely fucking ads.

Ok can someone recommend to me an android video editor that doesn't contain ads? I literally just need to dump audio into a video container with an assigned black frame for an image. Fdroid video transcoder doesn't work.

Ok I understand that, but I can post videos with audio and it's fine
And Incan post videos with no audio and it's fine
But if I post a video with no video stream, everyone loses their mind

Sub 8megabytes, check. Compatible MP4 filetype, check. What am I missing??
