I think a distinction needs to be made between what I do and what "advertisers" do.
I don't sell luxuries. I sell software that helps businesses reach legislative compliance with labor laws. I don't sell fucking shoes. I don't buy personal data, I don't sell personal data. The information I use is explicitly opt-in.
I write ads. I write copy. I write technical documents. I edit b2b tenders. I market to potential customers. I build collateral. I don't trick, or decieve.

My long point is: there's a lot of distinction to be made inside of advertising, marketing, and sales.
There is room in the space for ethical behavior in advertising and marketing, and there are ethical people inside that industry. The giants make it bad for the few of us trying not to be shit, and I have to use their tools to survive.
But Prometheus stole fire from the gods, and now they're all fuckin dead so you know what there's hope after all.
