Gab

Some bozos: "You know not everyone on gab is a nazi, right? Have you seen their feed?"

Guess what? If they're choosing gab as their home, they're supporting nazis. If you support nazis, you enable the harm they do.

Guess what? They have the option of going somewhere--anywhere--that isn't gab. It's not our fault if they choose to live among the nazis, and I'm sure as hell not going to let hundreds of nazis into my mentions just for these people who "have their own reasons" for being there.

Haha that came out right on my phone but not in my browser.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people

Fair warning: if you're going to tell me I should let the nazis in and debate them to defeat them, my first instinct will be that you are also a nazi...because that is and has always been their first step. And I'm not afraid or ashamed to block anyone I think might be a nazi, because guess what: me choosing to ignore you isn't 'censorship'; you are not entitled to my time or my ears.

Don't 👏 Platform 👏 And Debate 👏 Nazis

What people don't seem to get is that blocking nazis is literally a way of protecting lives. If you've never been driven to near suicide from online harassment, you probably don't understand that. It's not about "not wanting to hear opinions you disagree with."

And if you think what nazis believe is "just an opinion" then you're no ally of mine.

No, concerned white dude, we will _not_ watch your video about why we shouldn't be blocking Gab and how people can be saved from the neo-nazi movement.

Do you want the job? Why don't you go and sign up to Gab and do it? Because I'm not saying it's a total lost cause or that it shouldn't be done--but taking a hard stand against bigotry and protecting vulnerable communities comes first.

How much experience do you actually have with them? Have you read their playbooks? I doubt it, or you'd know that you're talking about giving them exactly what they want. To be let in. To be debated. To have new recruitment opportunities. For every one you 'save' from their movement, they'll recruit ten more in the process.

None of this is new. Can we please not make the same mistakes over and over?

Holy shiiiiit this came out today and is quite relevant:

Why Don't We Just Be Nice to the Nazis? youtu.be/K7iMAtWNAfI

See what I mean when I say "We've been through this before"? Henry flippin' Cadbury, man!

@Lexi

"If an open-door policy can cure even one Nazi, it totally justifies all the space their buddies got to screw over & harangue innocent people. I of course mean *you* talk to them. I'm not gonna' risk making them mad. I mean I would but I'm busy.

"Also you can totally trust I'm neutral here as I throw around popular innocent catch-phrases like 'witch hunt' & 'virtue signaling.' I am not at all a chickenshit concern-trolling dickbag."

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@Lexi I deeply suspect that the more we speak about gab, the more gab will become larger and larger...

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@Lexi

Aye. I’m willing to debate people on tax policy but the moment they want to put kids in cages we’re done.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@mkb so basically we should not federate with instances that allow Republicans? while this position has its appeal I feel that it may have some practical disadvantages

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@kragen

For sure it all gets dicey in a lot of cases.

I have’t cut off my trumpist relatives but I sure don’t get into politics with them.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@mkb This is understandable.

@Lexi I'm in a difficult situation where my podcast is being followed by a gab account.

I see the value in both sides of blocking vs non-blocking. There's a chance that someone will like our show and maybe change their minds. On the other hand, they could try to get information about our followers or commenters.

And then (to make things extra complex), blocking them might just antangonize them into further action.

Thoughts?

@emacsen
What kind of information about your public could reasonably be acquired? If there is not an immediate danger, waiting is a good strategy.

@Lexi

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@offication @Lexi Knowing listeners of the show.

Guests and other info can be gathered by the website.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@emacsen

@Lexi
Can that information be used to damage someone? I can see how listening to some podcasts might reveal political preferences, do you think this is your case? If it is, is blocking even enough?
On the other hand, I strongly support blocking spammer instances.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@emacsen At first I was going to say, "I'm not sure; I've never been in that position and frankly I'm not very bright and you'd be better off asking someone else."

But uhh...I guess if it were me I'd take the stand against hate. We have to tell them at every opportunity that the hate that they spread, or passively allow to spread, is not okay, on principle. Every little helps; that's what being anti-fascist is all about.

Gab; Nazis; Subtoot

@Lexi 11/10 guys who do the “we should befriend and convert Nazis” thing have no interest in *anyone* doing what they suggest.

There’s a reason they only do their act in spaces where people don’t want Nazis around

Gab; Nazis; Subtoot

@SelfsameSynonym @Lexi

Yeah, the people who are sincere about changing their opponents are... off doing it. Not berating your or me because we'd rather *not* do it.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@Lexi -raises hand- Hello. I'm a survivor of online harassment. Literally forced to remove myself from Twitter for a full month because it was inducing depression and the stress was killing my appetite.

Yep. Starvation and malnourishment due to online harassment. Physical effects due to words. It's fuckin' real, y'all, and so verbal harassment *is* physical abuse.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people; suicide mention

@KitsuneAlicia You already know this, but just for anyone else: I also had to leave Twitter due to extreme depression. I knew it was affecting my mental health, but I left it far too long before doing something about it. I didn't realize just how deeply it had impacted me until I was out of there for about a week--and it took me _months_ to get over the resulting mental health issues.

Gab; Nazis; blocking people

@Lexi well said.
