Also I think I don't like books with ambiguous cliff hanger endings. It feels like a cop out somehow.

It was a page turner for sure. Solidly good. There were long stretches that I found deeply compelling, but the last third or so, while still solidly good, was kind of lighter for me, more messagey.

Having said that, the final scene over the credits showed me why this movie probably seemed like a good idea. Given a little lighter direction etc, I can see the chemistry and energy Jack Black brings to the kids. But sheesh, that movie has a weird message.

Besides the sexist tropes (ball breaking much?) I just can't believe the movie culminates in Jack Black getting his big solo. Like, prove you are not a sociopath by encouraging this amazingly gifted singer to get her moment in the sun instead of sucking all the air out of the venue with your stage dives??!
