I read in a passing toot over the weekend that favourites are conversation killers.
Many conversations, or replies to toots, end in either a rebuttal, or a favourite to indicate that you accept / agree. It's rare that I receive a reply post-thread indicating that the conversation is over, or that some conclusion has been drawn.
I'm going to try and mend this in my tooting, and I implore you to give it a try as well; for the good of the ecosystem.

@Kryten sort of wish there were a 'bookmark' function apart from the fav. button.
people are definitely notified when their toots are fav'd. you can filter them out of the notifications section though if you don't want to see others' favs of your toots.
