gdi now my brain is thinking about my twitter-fediverse bridge spec and im half tempted to write it up all over again
for now all i'll say is over a year ago i proposed to gargron a methodology to allow fediverse accounts to follow twitter accounts through linking an account, and a monitor program that would allow FULL TWITTER access smoothly, in-line in your mastodon client, without any user-centric intervention, fully safely privacy wise so that information is never, ever leaked from a twitter account, and the user using the bridge can maintain all their twitter friendships
honestly the lack of innovation in this space, the space of bridging and linking social media and other closed-garden models such as facebook or discord and the like is frankly insulting: the only way to safely allow users to convert to more ethical software such as the fediverse itself is through such bridges: and nobody wants to make them, for some fucking reason

@hoodieak I may be streching the point but when I see the reaction towards cross-posting tools, I feel like bridges are always seen as this "compromise" and you always get a side-eye for using them.

Like, somehow if you _think_ about trying to bridge <FOSS thing> with <properitary thing> you're seen as not worthy of the FOSS stuff and therefore nobody wants to help you.

· Web · 2 · 1

@hoodieak Which is, of course, counter-productive because then newly arrived ppl are confronted with the

"Forget about <properitary thing>!! It's bad!!"

"But my friends/habits!"

"death to properitary things"

etc etc

@hoodieak But imo it all boils down to the thing most tech/dev folks tend to forget: most users won't care about your thing being FOSS if it's hard to use/migrate to or worse if it's hostile to non savyy users..

@hoodieak I know the time I saw G ranting about cross-posting tools on his account I felt like it wasn't a good look.

Like, you can't complain that Masto doesn't "rise in popularity" and yet condemn tools that help ppl migrate like they're plaging the platform and should be banned or something 😒

@Eramdam yyyyyyyyeeeeep

did you see my article on gargron's misconceptions in general and how he has mistreated queer activists that made masto what it is?

@hoodieak yup, I read it a bit quickly I have to admit but yea. As someone who took the banhammer from his Patreon/Discord because I called out his "if you dont like it then make a fork" behaviour to his face I agree 1000%
