If anything I'd prefer Microsoft to acquire Github than say...Google.
Microsoft is not a perfect company but it's not the 2000s anymore and I'm a bit annoyed by the usual "Microsoft: Bad™" takes. Especially when other comp like Google/FB are actually doing harmful things in present days 🤷
I'll take "Has a shitty policy over Windows' copyright but largely contributes to open-source" over "has a hip image but builds military AI" thank you.
BUT: of course the whole thing is a bit worrying re: centralization and depending on how Microsoft handles the acquisition, it might kill GitHub because Microsoft isn't notoriously good at keeping acquisitions in a good state.
But the centralization part would be worrying no matter the buyer, mind you.
I personally don't think MS is gonna ruin GitHub, or that suddenly they're going to go all Windows-copyrighty on the software hosted on it. That'd be an incredibly stupid move given theirs actions in open source in the recent years.
@elomatreb@Eramdam yep. the us military has been actively on mandate ( especially since recent incidents ) to upgrade systems to windows 10. like, yeah, it's fuckin' ~everywhere~.
that's not even getting into stuff out of microsoft research.
it's just that we're used to that.

the reason to be angry about google is that we thought they might be better than everyone else and they spat on those dreams. is mostly it. i think. 😣
@gdkar as much as I agree with you I think there’s a distinction to make between “having your stuff used by Bad Actors” and “actively trying to please Bad Actors and make it sound like it’s a cool thing to do”(Google’s project Maven and how enthusiastic their execs were about it is scary as fuck)

idk. not saying we should cut google slack for this ( and we ~did~ think they were serious about not being evil, and they did definitely jump on the evil bandwagon pretty fast. )

@gdkar of for sure. I didn't mention it but comps like Palantir have been doing that kind of shit for years already. "Business as usual" doesn't automatically equates to "good" as you say :/
@Eramdam look at what happened to Yammer. they were adding lots of good features. Got bought by Microsoft. all the plans came to a standstill. A year later, got folded into office. Really a shame.
