Jesus, what a week. 58 hours on the clock, 2 band rehearsals & four hours last night working on new songs with the headphones on, & now I’m feeling guilty because all I’ve done all day is balance the checkbook, pay bills, walk the dog & grocery shop. When is it ok to be done?

@anthracite don’t think it’s Nearly Free Speech — all my sites are up. (Checked in a moment of panic there

@DistroJunkie Play That Funky Music is on the list - I know about 8 more disco songs than I knew on Sunday. Problem: this drummer sings a lot, & he slows down when he sings. Hard to get in a groove.

@fobo The one song from the 70’s I can really get behind is Donna Summers’ I Feel Love. It was pretty ground-breaking. Get Down On It, not so much.

@fobo is there some sort of popular revival going on that I’m unaware of? This set is very horn-heavy, and I’d be surprised to see any horn players tomorrow night, so I’m dubious, but I’m a pro & they say, whoever they are, that so long as the bass can hold it together, the band will sound good. I’ll have this shit down note for note in another 3 weeks, for sure. Rock the boat, baby.

So I’ve picked up a gig in June, playing... Disco hits of the 70’s? It’s weird, trying to get a groove going to songs I viscerally hated when I was a teenage freak, but there’s some good stuff in here, too. Superstition, Right Place Wrong Time, & Saturday in the Park by Chicago, which has a surprisingly adventurous progression & arrangement. I’ve had the set list since Sunday at 1 pm & the first rehearsal is tomorrow. I know half the set. Yikes!

@unwary @Elizabeth_Fitz True, and there are those who now backup daily because they once didn’t frequently enough & suffered traumatic data loss (don’t ask me about March of ‘95)

So I spent about 3 hours this afternoon making a somewhat amateurish but fun band poster: octodon.social/media/NrcpbDfQI

@gotanda it’s not you, Someone on Metafilter will emerge to hate anything. There’s been one of them in every post I’ve made, except Music.

@DistroJunkie @ajroach42 Steve Marsh from Terminal Mind just re-released all the recordings he had of that band on CD a month ago. They’re selling it at Antone’s records on Guadalupe.

@DistroJunkie @ajroach42 Live at Raul’s got reissued on CD a while back, but it’s out of print again. It has 2 Skunks songs - Cheap Girl & Don’t Push Me Around. I have it if you want MP3’s

@ajroach42

The Standing Waves were big on the local punk/new wave scene in Austin in 79/80.

The had a 3- song 7 inch EP.

I thought I still had it, but it got lost. I turned up one of the songs on line recently.

Very few? They probably printed 500 copies.

Never knew any of them but 1 or 2 are still active in music- they departed for other cities I believe.

@boisdevache we have a pretty good admin. Diligent about maintenance, uptime, brooks no bullshit from trolls or bullies. It’s a good space. Welcome!

@stoof I’ve just gone radio silent the last week, as life has intervened, in case you were wondering why you weren’t seeing my posts.

*coffee time!*

So here’s a song by the one band I’m in that actually has a gig - everyone got to contribute parts, so the writing was a group effort:

I am having the hardest time not turning my tax return into musical gear right now, despite being almost utterly dormant. (1 band has 1 gig in May!) I really want a year’s salary in savings more than anything right now, but it looks like it’s gonna take 5 more years for that to happen & I’m an impatient consumerist.

@logan_life So there have been 2 big waves of Mefites onto Mastodon, now - I joined during the first one in April of last year, then mostly forgot about it, came back during the 2nd wave last November-ish & am trying to put some real effort into making this a thing that’s better than Twitter for me. I support my local admin through Paetron, since I have little else of value to add besides my incisive, cutting wit. Welcome!

@DistroJunkie Sad that he felt like he needed to go to such lengths & I’m wondering if we’ll ever learn his motivation. The whole thing was baffling, but yeah case closed.
