@photopuck Yes ALSO Chuck Rainey. I’ve spent years of my life tearing apart Rainey’s parts. We could list great players from the 70’s all night- my point is McVie is a very, very good player who is overlooked because of understated style, but when you dig into it, there’s something strong going on down there with him. I’ve been learning Rhiannon lately, and it’s kind of kicking my ass. Very intricate, precise & well thought-out track. He makes subtle moves that are foundational.

@generica @photopuck Jaco’s best work was on Joni’s albums - his melodic sense really shone on them. Point is, we can drop names all night, but McVie needs to be re-considered. From the Peter Green era on up until now, he’s been quietly cranking out some phenomenal bass playing in the shadows of giants & he’s a consummate pro, a real journeyman who knows his craft. Bonus points - he’s still alive 😂

@Devils_Rancher @photopuck

Just listened to Rhiannon and I'll give you he's an unsung hero of the song, pardon the pun. I have admired them since the song came out.

@generica @photopuck That’s the essence of bass playing to me - phenomenal parts underpinning the song, yet not getting in its way. You can go years without even realizing a bass track like that totally carries the song & man, he deserves some recognition for that because it’s a skill.

@Devils_Rancher @generica Pardon, I fell asleep, and yes I agree the bass work on Rhiannon is exceptional, so much so the song is essentially hung on it like clothes, and without it would collapse.

@bongo_x I don’t even recall that guy’s name but I recently wend back through their first couple albums & was surprised by how well they’ve stood up. Solid playing throughput. Well recorded, too.

@Devils_Rancher

They sound great, but every couple of years I hear "Take the long way home" or "Give a little bit" and think "I've got to listen to more Supertramp!". Then I do and remember, oh yeah, I only like those 2 songs. But they're good songs.

It's Dougie Thomson.

@bongo_x Yeah, I went through the iTunes Store & cherrypicked the good songs from those albums. Child of Vision was one, & man, I love the guitar bit at the end of Goodbye Stranger, which is a hokey lyric, but an amazingly well arranged song.
