@pzmyers I read your blog. Could symmetry have been the first factor for having two nostrils first, then the alternating breathing between the two have developed later to increase efficiency? Do other mammals alternate nostrils too?
@Depsilor Yes, definitely. Especially since we're descended from fish with two nostrils that are not connected to the respiratory system.
Other mammals do alternate. I suspect birds do, too, since their respiratory systems are more sophisticated than ours.
