I'm back, what's been happening with Mastodon?
With news of Unroll.me selling user inbox info to Uber, lots of people are repeating "if you're not paying for it, you're the product."
I've said before, and will continue to say, that that is the wrong formulation. Sometimes you pay for it and you're still the product – look at US ISPs. Sometimes you don't pay for it and you're not the product – free software.
The real question is whether a software or service empowers users, which can't be boiled down to whether you paid.
@rysiek @wogan @lattera My greatest fear is software controlling critical systems for peoples life and liberty and for the possibility of whistleblowing, journalism and resisting the state power intentionaly being made say "I can't let you do that" in some cases. In a world where everything is computers that can be the death of freedom.
FOSS can be hacked, but not built to serve others than the users without anyone knowing about it.
@MattRose I mean the alt-right and neo-nazis have been using social media to radicalise dissatisfied young people for years now. Would it not be better to force them into an echo chamber?
Advertising is a cancer.
mstdn.jp has surpassed mastodon.social in number of users! Congrats to @nullkal!
I have applied a domain block of type silence with reject_media toggled on to pawoo.net, because of increasing reports of loli content.
This type of domain block is not yet exposed from admin UI, so I'll probably follow up with an explanation on how to do it, but if you're an instance admin you can just use the "suspend" option for a nuclear solution to the problem.
I also intend to open up a GitHub issue for discussion about content caching strategies.
@pixiv Hey! I hope you realize this is not personal. In the west, loli content is not acceptable in most places. Do you intend to moderate it in the future, or will you keep allowing it on your instance?
Sad news. Due to content that is seemingly illegal in the US and EU and the administrators of the instance not moderating them effectively we have added our first domain block that silences users on pawoo.net and refuses to download media from them.
We have also wiped media attachments from that domain from the past 48 hours. sad but necessary to protect our servers and users it seems :/ we hope this will be temporary and the administrators will take action on their instance so we can unsilence
So, uh, could I just block this entire instance? #featurerequest
Is it possible for a user to mute an entire instance?
